Got a new Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive (2.5in.) with USB 3.0.

Now for some reason when I plug it into either the USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports after a few minutes my computer will just simply lock up...no Ctrl+Alt+Del...no moving mouse cursor...nothing. Just locks up. Hard Reset Required.

All drivers for the USB 2.0/3.0 ports are installed and my 3.5in. external 1.5TB drive doesn't create any issues (Seagate 1.5TB in some external enclosure from NewEgg)...neither do any thumb drives or hell, any other USB device for that matter.

The issue exists only with this FreeAgent external drive. I was thinking maybe it is a bad drive but last night I copied 800GB of stuff to it no problem...kept the PC on overnight while I was sleeping to allow everything to copy...woke up and it was done, surfed the web before work and BAM lock up! Go to work then come home start computer up play a game for 1 minute BAM LOCK UP!

Restart PC (again) with drive unplugged with zero issues all night.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks!

Have you tried checking the Event Viewer? Tried the drive in a different USB port?

Also, are you using the Seagate manager software?

This happens to me once in awhile with any USB 3.0 thumb drive or HDD reader. It's weird but if I unplug it, my PC is back to normal.
