New External HD slows boot

I have a Samsung 1 Tb F3 internal HDD that has been making a lot of noise when I shut the computer off. The squealing and screeching started off intermittenly, now it happens every time I turn the computer off. I decided I needed to back everything up and RMA the
the HDD. I bought a WD 1.5 Tb Elements 2.0. I've noticed that it has slowed the boot time down considerably. It even takes longer to get to the motherboard logo. I can't tell if the performance of the computer is slower, if it is, it's not by much. Is this common with the addition of an External HD? The odd thing is the Samsung is no longer squealing when I turn the computer off. It does seem to take longer to shutdown though. Any ideas on this? Thanks.
 
It could increase boot time just because the BIOS wants to wait for it to be spun up all the way before proceeding, in case it needs to boot from the external drive. Shutting down could take a tiny bit longer if the OS needs to perform some maintenance on the additional storage volume. It shouldn't affect performance during actual operation though.
 
had something similar with a mates PC.
i got them to either power down the drive or unplug the USB cable before booting or shutting down.
