Hi all,

It's been a while since I've built my own rig, so I need some help and opinions.

My goal is to get a nice QUIET gaming/developing machine to use for next 3+ years. Figure I should be able to hit 3.4 or hopefully 3.6GHz with a E6600. With that in mind, here's what I picked out so far:

Intel Core2Duo e6600 $330 shipped
evga 122-ck-nf68-ar 680i $251 shipped
GSkill 2GB 4-4-4-10 800Mhz TXDD2048M800HC4DC $287+ s/h
Nvdia 8800gts / gtx $420-450 / $600-630
hitachi 7k500 $188 shipped
Antec P180 $90 shipped
SilverStone ST50EF-Plus 500W PS $90 shipped
DVD-R (haven't researched this yet) $30

Not planning SLI, since I figure in 3 years there should be a much better single card solution out there. I'd like to keep this rig pretty quiet. Also hoping I wouldn't need to use HS/F for the CPU to hit 3.4+, but would consider a Scythe Infinity or some such if absolutely necessary.

So my main questions are, will this be a pretty simple overclock?

Also, for a E6600, do I need the good ram such as the ones I listed above, or can I save about $100 and use a nice pair of value rams?

Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions!

P.S. At this point I'm thinking to go with the GTS. If I remember correctly, GTX is 20% faster, and with the price being 30+ percent higher...it doesn't seem to be worth it. I'll also be picking up a 24" LCD, not a 30", so think GTS should last me long enough. :p

If you don't need sli go for something like a Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3 for around $150. For $150 you can pick up a 500gb samsung hdd. For the ram you should be able to get away with the cheaper g.skill stuff http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231098 as it still overclocks nicely. If your planning on getting to 3.4ghz+ spend the extra money and get a half-decent cpu cooler to ensure that your overclock will be stable.

Great choices there.....

You just forgot to add the CPU Fan and you'll need a good one

Tuniq Tower 120
Scythe Infinity
Thermalright Ultra 120

Thanks for the comments so far...

Is the Gigabyte board easy to OC with? The reason why I picked the 680i board is I read that it's really easy to use and had a lot of awesome (atleast on paper) performance features like LinkBoost etc etc. Is it really not worth it if I'm not planning SLI?

What's the 500GB samsung HDD? Haven't heard of good samsung HD...

Anyone else have comments and suggestions? :p :p

The gigabyte board is for people on a budget, good board, but not better than the high end boards.

The samsung drive is on sale somewhere for $150 and that's probably why it got mentioned (I didn't even know samsung made HD's)

I'd stick to the Hitachi drive though....
