New E6400 - Need Help Installing

Alright guys, just picked everything up earlier today for my new build. Im pretty much done putting everything together, except for the cpu. The problem Im having is that I cant seem to lock the cpu in very easily. It places in the mobo just perfectly, but Im afraid that the chip may break or crack if I try to force the clip to lock the chip in place. Is it normal for the clip to be slighty hard to lock in place? Or...would anyone have any suggestions or any guides on how to install one? Its a E6400, with a Asus P5W DH mobo.

Well, "hard" is kinda subjective.. if you're over there benching 600lbs, your idea of hard may be a tad excessive ;)

But FWIW, the little lever should by no means just fall down low enough to make it under the hook on the mobo bracket.. you've gotta push it down there, AT LEAST a few lbs of force is required. Maybe more, hard to measure pounds of force :p

Look at it this way. Remove the CPU, and unhook, raise, lower, hook, the cpu lock lever several times. If it functions smoothly every time without feeling like it gets "stuck" on something on the way down, then the socket is functioning just fine. Drop the CPU in, it can only fit one way, and then press the thing down. As long as the plate/lever on the socket aren't way out of line or something, you're not gonna break the chip.
 
Thanks for the reply waltherone. The lever doesnt get stuck at all, and the cpu fits in perfectly, so I guess theres no harm in putting a little force on the lever :p. Ill give it another go in the morning, and will update back.
 
Alright! Tryed putting the chip in again today, and got it working. Just finished formatting the HD, and noticed a few problems. One, when I go into the BIOS to change my settings and such, and exit the BIOS, the computer shuts down. Second, I noticed through the hardware monitor that the CPU is running at 80C. Anyone know what could be wrong for either one of the problems? Ive got the stock cooler running on the cpu right now, but from other posts that ive seen around here, the maximum temperature that a 6400 should operate at is 61C. Any reccomendations?
 
I seriously hope that's in degrees F... That or the BIOS is not reporting the right amount. With my 120mm Blue Orb, I get 34C which is roughly 80 degrees F. I can't imagine a stock cooler sucking that much. Use a different program to find the temp and update the BIOS.
 
Sorry to say, but it is in C. Its hard to think that the BIOS could be wrong, but I guess thats a possibility. The thing is Windows isnt even fully installed yet. I just got past formatting, and once it was done I took a look at the BIOS only to realize that the temperature is so high. I dont know if its risky to finish installing Windows - I hope that doesnt melt the chip or anything by the time its done! LOL...I dont understand the problem with the BIOS either. Seems like its having trouble restarting.

^^^ Hahaha, nice advice, ill give that a try soon. Just a few moments ago I went into the BIOS and disabled the CPU Q-Fan option. The CPU fan is running just a little over 1700 - im guessing thats fine?
 
Check the vcore in the bios..make sure it's not some rediculous amout. Try setting it to 1.25 or 1.35. If thats not it...re-apply the thermal paste and make sure u got the heatsink tight ... sounds like u have a problem putting pressure on things :p
 
Ill check the vcore in the bios as well and see how it goes. Im sure the heatsink is on right - clipped in perfectly, and doesnt move. If the BIOS settings dont work then I guess I may have to reapply the paste.
 
vcore defaults set to 1.12, and I cant seem to change it. The CPU temperature reached 90C, and automatically shut off. I also touched the heatsink but it felt pretty cool. Very odd...

are you sure it isn't melted now?
 
I didnt apply any paste myself - Just the paste that is preapplied on the stock heatsink

**Just to add, the mobo seems to be running pretty fine temperature wise - @ around 34C
 
On the stock intel heatsinks, you have to put ALOT of pressure on the springs in order to get them down all the way, because it sounds like you may not be getting contact. Did you check to see the spread of the paste on the cpu?
 
Alright, Im ganna let this run for a bit and see how it works out. What I did was take out the heatsink, and check the spread of the paste like you suggested. The thing is, the preapplied paste comes in three horizontal stripes on the bottom of the heatsink. After taking it off, I checked the CPU, and there were 3 fairly faint traces of the paste on it. On the heatsink however, it looked as if the paste had barely moved. So what I did was I rotated the heatsing, so that the paste would cross the paste from before. And so far temperatures are looking better. 30C...

**I guess the BIOS was right about the 90C...LOL. Ill post back after some time, and see how the temperatures holding up.
 
yeah, i did an E6400 build this weekend, and i just used the stock thermal compound/cooler on there. temps were around 48C. I'm thinking that's a little too warm for me, so next time i'm at my dads (it was a build for him) i'll pull it off, and drop a bead of Arctic Silver on it.

also, FWIW, i thought locking the CPU in required a bit more force than i expected too. it's wasn't a struggle or anything, but it locked it in there pretty tight. given there are no real pins on the cpu (just contacts - unlike AMD) it makes sense it needs to really push the contacts together.

Yeah...temperatures seem to be holding up. CPU - around 35, while the mobos at around 42. Sound reasonable? Also, what are some good tools to monitor internal temperatures? I use to use Everest, but what are some altternatives?
 
coretemp, or TAT - Thermal Analysis tool, are the only ones I know of. My e6400 idles at 35c, loads around 50c on motherboard sensor. 46 Idle and 63 load according to TAT/Coretemp. My CPU is overclocked though, and I have an infinity, so your temps aren't bad for the stock cooler.
 
Just, to add, I think both the programs are not giving me correct information. My BIOS is showing that the CPU is running at 34C - but when I go into any of the two programs, they tell me its running at 48C... :confused:
 
Well, there's always a difference between windows and bios temps, because in the bios when it reads temps the cpu isn't DOING anything... but that's a pretty big difference. The bios gets its temperature information from the same source as those programs, so I'm guessing that when you say 48c, your computer is DOING something at the time.

Is that at idle, or are you sitting there installing some programs and stuff since you just installed windows? 48 would be a good loaded temperature, a bit high for idle...
 
We are talking about coretemp, it always shows a temp higher than the mobo, since it's supposed to be internal.
 
Open up Coretemp.

Go to http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm

Download the Orthos program, extract and run it. Select Orthos Blend. Start it.

Both of your cores will be 100% loaded. After about five minutes or so you should reach your maximum temperatures, as they will not rise anymore past a certain point. That's what people are wondering about.

FYI, this program is also a pretty good indicator of all-around system stability. Start it up and then go to sleep, let it run overnight. If you can get to eight hours with no errors, you're doing pretty okay. Some people let it run 24 hours or even longer for additional peace-of-mind.

Does coretemp read from a different temp diode than the motheroard gets its temp readings from? I haven't owned a core2 machine yet so I haven't had the chance to play with one.

To the OP, as for the 65c, it seems a bit high, but then again I haven't owned a core2 machine yet, and I know a lot of the temps I've seen posted are with aftermarket coolers rather than the stocker.

So I guess what I'm saying is that my ability to help here has quickly diminished. I'll just exit now :p
 
Now this is weird, Ive got two utilites to monitor CPU temperature: Core Temp & "Asus PC Probe II (Which came with my mobo utilites). Core Temp says the CPU temperature is at 46C, while PC Probe says the temperature is at 34C. :confused: :p
 
The ASUS program is reading the temperature taken from a thermal diode on your motherboard.

CoreTemp reads the temperature taken from a thermal diode inside the actual CPU.

Because the diode is closer to the source of heat CoreTemp will always read out numbers 5 to 10 degrees C. hotter than the diode on the ASUS motherboard. They're both being reported accurately.
