new drive makes whining noise

i just bought a new hard drive for my laptop. its the hitatchi 40gb 7200 rpm drive and every once in a while it makes like a whining noise even when everything is idle. anyone know why it does this?

when i recieved the drive, it was sealed in the anti-static bag and looked completely new so nothing makes me believe it was used.

Hmmm

My guess is something might be wrong with the drive.
Another issue might be something is vibrating in ur case. Unless ur 100% sure its the hardrive. then i recommend getting ur warranty on it.
Or just use it for now and see what happens....but weird noises couldn't be too good.
From my experience whenever my hardrive made really weird noises were when it was about to die.

could that be why its making whining noise sometimes; to do some checks sometimes?
