So, I'm relatively new to the whole server side of things. Anyway, I just build a (relatively) small form factor server and m trying to figure out which OS is going to be best. I was thinking about using WHS, but I've discovered that I should not use it with the 2tb WD EARS drives, which is what I've got. So my hardware is as follows:

AMD AthlonII 255 (3.1 GHz x2)
Zotac 880G-ITX mini-itx mobo
2x2gb kingston DDR3 1600
3x 2tb WD EARS Green drives in RAID 5 (using 880G integrated RAID)
1x 320gb WD Blue drive for OS
Antec earthwatts 380W PSU
Lian Li PC-Q08

I was hoping to stick with a windows server solution (I have access to pretty much my whatever I choose), but I want to get my home network setup with a domain and be able to back up all my PCs to the server, and possibly run a web server as well.
Anyone have suggestions on a direction for me?
Edit- forgot to mention I'll also be using it as a print server.

web server - will your ISP allow it? do they block port 80 /8080 hosting?

what do you need the domain for? or you just want to play around with it?

backing up, if you use server 2008 R2 ytou can use windows backup to backup to a network drive.

i would use raid 5 integrated and also raid 5 for 2T drives, if one dies, your going to be rebuilding it for days.

I am using 08R2 for my storage server, works fine. I do caution with using intergrated Raid. I speak from experience, as I just put together my server over the weekend and used the onboard (Intel) Raid with 4 500 gig drives.

The performance sucks. I thought it was my nics providing such a horrible transfer in terms of speed, until I moved an ISO from one partition to another, I was shocked. I also run VMServer on this box, and I was wondering why it took almost 2 hours to install Win7 in a vm - and this machine has an I7 with 24 gigs of ram so its not resources causing the problem.

Anyways, that's my experience and I recommend a Raid card to go with your setup, along with 08R2 SP1.

2008r2' vote.

Immrunning a few here and 2011sbs inside a vm, along with others.

Over the weekend I got 2008storage server up and running ith iscsi, Working great.

I would virtualize the DC and separate it from file serving functions.
If you are resource limited, W2k3 sp1 has been my choice. I have a few installations that only use around 78MB of RAM. The same cannot be said of of W2k8 R2.

Yeah, I thought about going with a dedicated RAID card, but #1, it was out of my price range, and #2, the Mobo only has a PCIe x1 slot, so I'd be limited to (I believe) a 2 drive card, which wouldn't be enough. I believe the AMD880G integrated RAID is decent, and if its a little slow, I'm not TOO concerned with it. I'll just have to live with what I have until I can afford to make a change:)

I'm on Qwest with their 20Mbit connection, so from my understanding they don't block any ports, so I should have the ability and bandwidth necessary.
I mostly want to play with the domain, but I'd also like to do some network management stuff so that I can automate things more so I can do things once on the server and push it to my PCs.

Regarding the last bit- you lost me. I'm using integrated RAID 5 on my 2tb drives not sure what you mean past that. I understand it would be rebuilding for a long time, but again, redundancy is important, but the immediate access is not always required- mostly for my wife's pictures, so rebuilding for an extended period would be ok as long as I don't lose the data.

How would you go about virtualizing the DC? I'm much more familiar with hardware than I am software, so sorry if this is a dumb question:-p.

Also- thanks to all, looks like I'll be trying to go with Server 08 R2, at least until WHS 11 or SBS 11 essentials come out:)
