New DirectX 9 Engine

Neat

Premium engines such as Doom 3, CryEngine, Source power games for today's market. By the time your new project is complete, you will be using previous generation technology, missing the vital opportunity to make that all important high-end visual impact with your game. UnrealEngine 3 is Reality Engine's closest competitor, aimed at the 2006 market

It looks like they are aiming this to be a step above the DOOM 3 engine, CryEngine and Source engine.

The Reality Engine is a true next-generation toolset for developing games in the competitive 2006+ timeframe, where near-photorealism will be expected

yep yep, i want photorealism baby

Under their Features I noticed a couple key things:

- virtual displacement (parallax) mapping
- High-Dynamic Range Rendering Using Floating-Point buffers, allowing for Tone Mapping, Exposure Adaption, and Blue Shift, for camera/eye perceptual rendering.

It looks like the engine supports Parallax Mapping (also called Offset Mapping, and generally known as Virtual Displacement Mapping). We STILL haven't seen this implemented in a game yet, so I'm anxious to see this. However, note that it still isn't true hardware dynamic displacement mapping, I guess we just aren't there yet, or at least the hardware isn't there yet. I heard somewhere that the Unreal 3 engine supports true displacement mapping, but I don't know for sure if it does or not. If it does the Unreal 3 engine would be a lot of competition for this engine.

Also note it supports HDR using FP buffers. I personally think this method of HDR is going to be a future feature in games that will be pretty big.

It looks like there are a couple games already being developed using this engine: http://www.artificialstudios.com/games.php One is slated for a 2007 release date, the other is TBA.

Per-Pixel Lighting and shading with support for PS3.0, PS2.X, PS2.0 and PS1.1.

well now...here is a new future engine that will support PS2.0B too...;)

we are getting closer... im thinking SLI would be a sys requirement for the amount of detail in a game with that...

I wish the guys making this engine the best of luck!

Its good to see some competition, and from the looks of their demos they are well on their way to producing a quality engine :)

Intresting thing.... Both games are going to be made for PC and Xbox 2. ATi is making the GPU for Xbox 2 based on the R520 core.....

this should really stress out current cards and possibly the upcoming ones

The games have to run smoothly on a console system (Xbox 2) which is based on the R520 core, thus, if the R520 core will be able to run this engine on the Xbox 2, why wouldn't it be able to on the computer?....

I'm not saying that it will, or anything, just something to think about....

look at halo... i suppose there is a lot that can go wrong with a port. however if they are both being made at the same time. it may turn out alright.

a few things.

1. it's the R500 core
2. it is using some powerful dual-cored cpu's (well supposedly tri-cored but i bet it is really dual)
3. consoles don't have to worry about big programs running in the background

If you guys go over to their forums, they personally respond and post their. Some info I got from there is that xbox2/pc will be able to play against each other. If you guys didn't see the games page you should check that out. They have a game called cry havok, needless to say it looks sweet. They also say somewhere that they are using 9700/9800s to develop on so maybe not as high system requirements as we thought.

"We're about to release a tech demo showing off all the engine features. Whereas Epic used a not-yet-released card in their Unreal 3 tech demo, this entire demo runs perfectly on a Radeon 9700. So to answer your question, the requirements are in-line with a game with our expected release date, they certainly aren't over-demanding. A DirectX9 card is ideal, with a DirectX8 one being acceptable."

Are you saying that the chip inside the XBox 2 will be dual-cored but the PC version wont?

no what i'm saying is, is that even when the dual-cored cpu's arrive on pc will they be hitting 3.0GHz?

1. itis infact the R520
2. microsoft have already patented the tri core design and if you havent seen this you best shut the fuck up cause your info is old
3.this is true, and also since all consels hardware is the same they dont have to optimize for 50 differnt gfx cards, jus 1 system

1. please show me a link or something to prove me wrong (i wouldn't want to think i'm right but actually be wrong) however when using google most (if not all) information i find states it uses the R500 core and will be of similar performance to the R520

2. i did hear and actually saw the leaked specs. which suggested a tri-core design (however at the time it seemed unreasonable). good to know microsoft may actually be pushing this technology

arnt consol games more lower resolution?..or are we talking HD now?..casue if XBOX 2 goes fully HD with flying colors...hell yeah!

what kind of "drivers" are on these moster consoles?...do they have drivers?...or somekind of updating system for the graphics like we do computers?...

I'm looking forward to the new engine developed by Gamebryo which will be used in Elder Scrolls IV. Its going to be an incredble game :).

http://www.ndl.com/

(Rockville, MD) October 22, 2004 -- Bethesda Softworks LLC, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion™ is currently in development for PC and future generation consoles. In development since 2002, Oblivion is another leap forward in role-playing with its combination of freeform gameplay and cutting-edge graphics. Oblivion is the sequel to the best-selling, award-winning role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind®, named 2002 RPG and Game of the Year for both PC and Xbox.

"Since starting this project two years ago, our goal has been to create the quintessential RPG of the next generation," said Todd Howard, executive producer of The Elder Scrolls® series. "We looked back at what we had done with the series, and then looked ahead to what the future of video games could be, and we think this is it."

In keeping with the Elder Scrolls tradition, players will have the option to experience the main quest at their own pace, and there will be plenty of opportunities to explore the vast world and make your own way. Numerous factions can be joined, such as the thieves or mages guilds, and each contains its own complete storyline and the chance to rise to the head of the faction and reap further rewards.

Howard commented, "Our games have always been about great depth and variety in creating any kind of character you want and going out and doing whatever you want." He added, "With Oblivion, we're taking the idea of a virtual fantasy world as far as it will go."

Oblivion features a groundbreaking new AI system, called Radiant AI, which gives non-player characters (NPCs) the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. They'll decide where to eat or who to talk to and what they'll say. They'll sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. Full facial animations and lip-synching, combined with full speech for all dialog, allows NPCs to come to life like never before.

Oblivion is a single-player game that takes place in Tamriel's capital province, Cyrodiil. You are given the task of finding the hidden heir to a throne that sits empty, the previous emperor having been killed by an unknown assassin. With no true Emperor, the gates to Oblivion (the equivalent of hell in the world of Tamriel) open, and demons begin to invade Cyrodiil and attack its people and towns. It's up to you to find the lost heir to the throne and unravel the sinister plot that threatens to destroy all of Tamriel.

It will take the Elder Scrolls series to new heights and considering Morrowind was RPG GOTY and is still one of the hottest selling RPG games, it wont be any surprise to me.

Morrowind is easily the best single player RPG you can buy even yet today.

i think normal tv resolution is 640x480.the xbox supports all forms of HD (well except 1080p) so i'm guessing xbox 2 will push it once more. (granted 1080i is supported by like 5-6 crappy games but it's a start).

and btw that engine running oblivion right now looks awesome

do the firmwear ever need upgrades?...like does nvidia ever discover something and then kick themselves for not having it fixed in the initial release

The xbox actually has the power to push 1080i? Damn.. I thought it was just 480p. Every box i've seen says HD support but 480P is as low as HD support gets. I don't own an xbox but a friend does.

Yes and no. Throughout the life cycle of a console, the firmware does get upgraded slightly, but usually never enough to warrent a mass 'patch' to everyone who buys a console. It's like DVD/CD-ROM firmware, or even router firmware.

like does nvidia ever discover something and then kick themselves for not having it fixed in the initial release

If that were to happen, all hell would break lose. From what I know, there has never been a case of a componet manufaturer realizing they messed something up. However, recently the new release of the Starwars Triliogoy update Xbox firmware.... Also, sometimes, hackers/modders write special firmware to enable certain fuctions that enable modding consoles easier, but that's only if you want to mod your console to play imports or such.

Not to mention that regular TV res. is considerably less than the average computer monitor.
