Hello everyone,

I plan on buying some parts tomorrow for a new data server. I'm having some question about SAS versus SATA norco cases.

-I don't plan to use RAID. I have WHS 2003 and I plan to pool the drive with Windows 8 server. The drives will be WD SATA6G.
-I'm looking to buy the RPC-4220 but it uses SAS connector. At the beginning, I will only have 4 drives and I have enough SATA port avaliable on my motherboard. Is there a way to connect the drives without buying an expander?
-I saw that norco is making SATA case, RPC-4220, but in the long run, SAS look better for cable management. In the future, I also plan to buy a Supermicro board.

Thanks for your help,

LJ

I think you need a reverse fanout-cable.
Yours is SAS (controller) => SATA (backplane)
However you need SATA (controller) => SAS (backplane)

Like this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133033
Compliant Connector on Case Backplane End: 1 x 36-pin - SFF-8087. Connector on Raid Controller or Motherboard End: 4 x 7-pin - SATA Use for server case or enclosure with MiniSAS SFF-8087 Backplane, such as RPC-4220 storage case

Your looking for a reverse breakout cable. The one in the link to newegg is the correct cable.
