I currently have a Athlon 64 X2 5000+ CPU, I think its a bottle neck for my new GPU. My motherboard is an BIOSTAR TFORCE TF520-A2. I'm thinking about picking up an X2 6400+ for about a 100 bucks off newegg. Is that my best bang for my buck upgrade for me? Thanks

X3 8750 BE OCed should be overall better than a X2 6400+, and the 'new' 89W 6000+ may even be better, and a less expensive 5400+ BE or a X2 7750 may be better yet if your mobo will handle the X3 8750 BE and X2 7750.

Your board isn't AM2+ and doesn't support Phenom based processors so that kills the X2 7750BE and X3 8750BE as options. Likewise it doesn't officially support any processor over 89 watts either so the 6400+ Windsor could blow your mosfets without adequate cooling on them. If you want to risk it and stick some heatsinks on the mosfets the 6400+ Windsor would be more of an upgrade than any Brisbane chips. The 6000+ Brisbane and 5400+BE Brisbane should overclock almost identically and will top out at 3.1-3.4ghz depending on how crazy you go with voltage. Your 5000+ shouldn't be far behind those and thus makes going to a higher speed Brisbane not worthwhile in my opinion.

I would recommend you wait until you can afford a new motherboard & processor at once. If you can afford this right now and it's a pressing issue:

$153 + shipping for a 790GX + X2 7750BE - you'll get future upgrade options. If that isn't within your budget at the moment or you don't plan on upgrading again for a long time don't sweat it. Just wait because AM3 is on the way and AM2+ boards and chips are going to drop in price.

How is the driver support on them BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX A2+? I noticed with the cheaper boards the driver support is rather crappy. Also will my 430 watt PSU have the guts to run all this? Thanks

Ill look into the new PSU. But that CPU you linked is faster then the 6400+ even tough its lower clock right?
