So my current e8400 has been acting up lately and since it has a 30 day return policy to microcenter I'm going to take it back. Chances are I'll only get in store credit. So should i get another e8400 or something like q660? i pretty much only do gaming.
Also how do I tell which stepping to get and which is the best?
 
How much did you pay for it? You may even be able to get a better CPU for your money. If you can get an E8500 instead then I'd go for it; otherwise, you'd probably be better off with a quad for a long-lasting system.
 
i paid 120ish, was an open box special. but i can easily add some money np.
 
For that price, get the chip replaced. That's an amazing deal for an E8400.
 
What exactly is "acting up"?
And who's to say it wont happen again with a new CPU?
Get your system stable first...
 
I have the chance to replace it, so i am :) What the best stepping on e8400 and q6660? and how do you know this off the box.

How is a cpu that is slower, that is not supported for the most part, beyond it's first 2 cores, an added value. By the time quads mature, something a lot better, will be available.

OP, get the e8400 again.
 
so got a new e8400, installed it. realtemps shows 1 core being 6-8 degrees cooler than the other. 1 idles at 25, other at 32ish. weird my previous would idle about the same degree.
 
yeah they're idling @ low temps it won't hurt the CPU at all, with lapping, it makes your cpu flat and smooth allowing contact to be evenly distributed.
