Hi all i am after some help(guidance) in choosing some good parts for my upgrade.

I have a general idea of what i would like, but am not expertised in the field of computer building.

I ask my local pc shop about this part and that, they dont seem very fothcoming in giving me the right advice i feel!

Here is basically what i would like to get and put together

Motherboard?
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...oduct_uid=98015

processor? maybe a lesser 1 considering the price?

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...oduct_uid=88107

Graphics card? again perhaps a lesser 1 considering price

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...oduct_uid=97761

This is what i would like to aim for(depending on misses)

Oh and power supply

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...oduct_uid=64849

Now would i have to change my harddrive/soundcard and also my ddr ram?

was thinking of corsair ram but again depends on price

Im not made of money before you get any ideas, just birthday and xmas soon plus been working overtime so hoping to have a good set up

Any information/help will be greatly recieved

Thanks in advance

First off, I would suggest looking over at www.newegg.com for parts, they have great customer service and decient pricing. They also seem to have the more desireable feature rich componets.

what are your ram specs, and harddrive? please post the spec's for further evaluation. :)

oh, also post your sound card spec's. lastly, what is your range that your wanting to spend for all of this. Give us a general ballpark figure, or a high end and a low end, then we might be able to present two possible solutions and you could narrow things down to meet your needs.

If your unsure of your spec's and not confident about taking the box apart to see at this point, then I suggest using a utility such as sandra lite to find out what is detected. Should be able to glean enough information from "system information" to see what you have. Its a free download, here's the link. http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tag=srch&nid=1&qt=sandra&tg=dl-20

also, that utility will be handy once you build your system up to compare it to other systems with similar specifications (to see if your running like you should) and how your system fits into the bigger picture against higher and lower powered machines.

And as soon as you've had enough of Newegg's price gouging, go to www.froogle.com and look around. :)

That might be a valid point. I know there are a few cheaper sites on the web, and I havn't bought much hardware lately, I did buy some memory there about six months ago. My suggestion was that they have a fairly good reputation and good customer service, so I don't mind paying a little extra for that. If you find a cheaper place, just check to make sure thier rated good. As rule of thumb, you can go to www.pricewatch.com and look to see who is cheapest, just be advised to look at the dealers rating and how much they have sold. Believe me, its worth a few more dollars to not have the problems, and usually thats all it amounts too. I'd rather pay an extra $5-7 for my motherboard knowing that 99% chance its working, and good/quick service if I end up with that 1%.

here is an example of the utility, as you can see, it might not show all information but enough to know what you've got. BTW, this is my system I built almost 3 years ago. Its an athlon xp throughbred 1800+ overclocked (aircooled only) 1.85v and 49C full load. Its been running stable for all these years now. I bought the processor from newegg for $70 and overclocked it beyond even the top available processors of that time (saved approx $450) Plus I had all the fun learning and having the satisfaction of doing it myself. my system shows up as a 2700+ (because of the multiplier setting) but as you can see, its clocked at 2.28Gh and benches a little over 3200+. :)

Hey thanks for te replies.

I have 1.5 gig of ram, 1 1igig and other 512

soundcard is phillips sonic edge psc605

well to be honest those links i posted are what i would like in a ideal world if you know what i mean. I would say top wack for those parts probably 500 pound ( i think!!)

and low end budget 300 pound, so some where in betwwen those prices for a decent proceesor, graphics card and motherboard.

If you need any more info just let me know, i could post a spec like you did with sandra

whats the SPEED of the ram? this is the critical information needed to evaluate whether you will need to replace it. Since your on a budget, and it doesn't seem that you have any specific needs, ie (high end graphics processing) I would suggest getting an intergrated motherboard, there are many nice ones out there now a days. That will also upgrade your graphics/soundcard for very cheap. It will likely also have intergrated networking, these motherboards don't cost much more and have many nice options and features.

Motherboad selection in my humble opinion is the most critical aspect of building the system even over cpu selection today. cpu selection while important and becoming more complex in the last year or so, still remains second in my book. Reasoning? because MOST users do not need all the power and expense of these ultra fast processors, infact look the the giant cost increase associated with getting a magrinally better processor (10% performance gain at 50-100% or more cost increase). Also, cpu power has far outpaced the casual users low level software requirements, infact even mid-upper level software programming requirements will should run fine for years to come. Only an elite few require that raw data crunching poWer of the upper spectrum (expensive) cpu's. Example: Graphics requirements is more GPU dependent for gaming, thus spending more on a (high end) video card is justified, maybe some extra ram too, then just get a mid-upper level cpu vs upper end processor.

Also, getting a good MOTHERBOARD, if selected properly will possibly allow you to upgrade at a further date without having to replace it. Maybe your next upgrad will consist of only buying that expensive cpu you can't afford right now.(once the prices drop next year or two)

Again you need to find your COMPLETE spec's OR open your box and find out manually, or use the utility. sandra

list the spec of the hardrive, including TYPE, SIZE, SPEED and TRANSFER RATE example (western digital 80gb 7,500 rpm, ATA133) Same with the ram, amount is simply not enough information, list the SPEED of the ram. example pc3200 (400mhz), pc2700 (333mhz) or pc1600 (200mhz), there is a signifigant difference in performance, also try to get the NAMEBRAND if possible. Even if you remove it out manually and its generic, it should be marked on the little black chips themselves, example: (Kingston/Micron Technology = MT on the chip) If you use the above utility I pointed you too It will be most helpful in a diagnosis of your current status. take a screenshot with this program capture wiz of the results given by sandra

So that we can view your results.
Then upload the jpg image of capture wiz to this link.supload then link it to this page for viewing. OR enter the data manually to this page, either way.

Building this system seems daunting at first glance, but given some time and desire to learn, your will be very happy in the end. This is NOT rocket science. If you are marginally intelligent with using a computer, you should be up to the task, plus you will learn during the process. Few things have given me more satisfaction over the years, by learning how to modify my own hardware and custom making something for myself. Its a fairly short learning curve, and in the end you will look back and say wow. You might even make a few poor choices at first (but they will be YOUR CHOICES) not some nerd living vicariously through you down at the local computer store, trying to sell YOU his ideal of his ultimate system specifications. building a computer is much like dressing up, there are many different styles, and people have different needs (ie surgeon dresses different than lawyer, farmer or even a hooker) dress to meet YOUR needs.
