Hi and TIA for your input.
I have ~$175 burning a hole in my pocket and plan to drive down to Microcenter tomorrow to get something shiny and new.
My rig:
GA-EP45-UD3L
4gb G.Skill 1066 DDR2
e8400 @ 3.6
Corsair 650w PSU
EVGA 8800GTS 640mb
500gb WD HD
ACER 22" LCD @ 1680 X 1050

My son and I game...Fallout 3, WoW, GRAW, CoH, AVP and some others.
My system is getting dated but I don't plan on a major upgrade anytime soon, just feel like spending some $$. Should I be looking at a Quad (q9300 is $149) or a new GPU (HD 5770 is $169) ?
Or are both ideas lame?
Thanks again.

I'd vote for a new graphics card since the primary concern is gaming.

Multithreaded games are beginning to catch on, but I think a new GPU would get more use.

If you look at the chart results, in the tests with 0 aa/ 0 af the gpus perform about the same.

If you are running high settings then the gpu. Do not buy a quad core.

The game can use more than 2 cores but the other threads do not do anything intensive. You won't notice performance jumps going from dual to quad.

Fallout 3 is not as multithreaded as the other two but it will still use 10-30% on the 2 extra cores.

If you are running low settings and want to improve fps, then you need something that will help you overclock higher.

Nice O.C. I got my 8400 stable @4.7 for 12 hrs prime but I did not want to go higher in fear of "etching" the processor... so I just run it @ 4.2 24/7 @ 1.28V. In these tough times who has the money to buy a new processor evey week? I got better things to spend the $$$ on......

5770>4850 and there is no way he snags a gtx275 from microcenter on his budget.

cool, thanks....gonna get the 5770, sell my stuff on ebay then get a quad. Gidyup!

GPU for sure =) I'm actually thinking of doing the same, I have a Q6600 in my desktop but my 8800GT is starting to get a little crusty in there on some of the newer games

Yo!....
Did what I said....got the Visiontek 5770 and am quite pleased w/ it ... definite upgrade and have NO regrets. Formatted, got the latest and all that, smooth going...i'm smilin'. Changed my mind about the quad tho....my e8400 suits me fine. Gonna go new stuff ASAP...mobo, ram, cpu. Thanks bro's
