I've said it before in some threads... Intel is not putting the Core2 line to sleep just because they have the i7 now. Prices will go down, and they're introducing new quadcores, including more energy-efficient models (65W TDP for a 2.83 C2Q is very interesting indeed).

I suppose this will put even more pressure on AMD and its Phenom II line.
I'm still on Socket 775 myself, and I might just pick up one of those Q9550s processors. Low power, high performance, and I can put off buying a new motherboard and DDR3 memory for at least a year.

yeah i agree. the i7 benchmarks are nice, but are they really realistic for everyday use? probably not (unless you're constantly rendering or something ((in which case you probably have a dual-socket xeon)) =\ ).
 
it worth the money the i7 any tested it ?

Well, I could use all the speed I can get. I develop high-performance software, and do audio/video processing in my spare time. Thing is just that the performance/cost ratio for Core2 is much better for me than Core i7 at this point. I can re-use my harddrives and my 6 GB of DDR2 memory, since all that is still very much up-to-date. A nicely overclocked C2Q will give me perhaps 80% of the performance of a Core i7 system, at 20% of the cost.
Then in a year or so, DDR3 costs and motherboards will have come down, so I can probably buy a decent Core i7 system for the 80% I save now. And I get to have a 32 nm one :)
 
DDR3 is just ridiculous still, and I'm not one to bitxx about costs. It's just hard to stomach paying that much for memory. Not to mention the whole X58 / i7 platform is so new that you're buying the first gen of everything and there will certainly be big improvements coming quickly. LGA1366 is in it's infancy. I would see little to no improvement from where I'm at now.
 
I would upgrade to a 65w C2Q for sure. I could really benefit from the reduced heat. 220w load heat is disgusting for my chip at 3.8ghz.
 
So, will th e8600 be the last of its line?

I still have no use for Quads as all I ever use my home PC for is FPS games an Office.
 
guess ill wait then to experiment to see if my rev. 1.3 DS3 with rev. 3.3 F13 bios will support 45nm. :D
 
Hmm, I'm really not interested in the 6mb cache in the middle model...

Still, 150w 4.0ghz is just exciting.
 
These are expensive little buggers, given their lower default clocks... Wish I could see the multiplier breakdown of all of them. I mean, I think of the E8600 at well below $300 with a default clock of 3.3GHz. The only thing close to that clocks at 2.53GHz. Low power's great, but what FSB will these things need?

It's fairly easy to break down:

Since they have a 1066MHz FSB speed, you simply divide it by 4. Then you take that and divide it from the given clock-speed.

Thus,

QX9300 → 9.5x
Q9100 → 8.5x
Q9000 → 7.5x

ddr3, yeah its awesome, but i can have 8gb of good quality ddr2 for the price of like 3gb of ddr3, maybe even 2gb.

i run 8gb ocz plat in my main rig and have it overclocked to close to 4ghz on a regular basis. The only thing i want i7 for is intel chipset sli, because as much as i love my 680i (i got a lucky one that doesn't eat ram) i prefer the intel chipsets...i mean they make the cpu obviously they know the best way to use it.

i can get close to the performance of i7 for a fraction of the price. not time to change yet.
