New compy like new engine?

I recently built a new compy and I plan to OC. But a friend of mine said that I should wait and let it "burn in" before I try to OC. (He also saidknows this from personal experience). Now I know this applies to other things (e.g., new engines) but I didn't know it applies to new compies, so my question is does it?

The idea makes sense but is it true?

Thx

Give it some time so that the thermal paste between the heatsink and CPU bonds.

Some people really believe in burn in, but i dont. when i get my stuff, i OC it right away. I dont want to wait for weeks to play with my new stuff. I'd say go ahead and OC. And then try to OC in a few weeks and see if you get better results, that way you'll know if burn in is needed.

Until I see some proof, I'm going to have to say "burn ins" are a myth in that they will increase your overclock as the CPU is used.

But "burning in" or stressing your CPU with prime95 can help the thermal compound "age" and it can lower temps by a couple degrees.

It probably wouldn't help increase your overclock, unless heat was holding you back.

Well my build has been stable at stock and did overclock a little and ran Prime95 on it but when I heard about "burn in" I backed it down. Thanks for all the info.

I always burn my CPU in while overclocking, Burn in is going to happen one way or another with electronics, It's like like mechanical parts in an engine where your mostly trying to seat the rings on the piston to make a good seal, as well as letting casting flaws and imperfections on gears etc in diff and tranny wear down before Pinning it.

"Speakers Burn In" more than CPU IMO....CPU's just wear out, they do not get better with age, they can only get worse, I know some may disagree but that makes no real sense IMO. The thermal compound and contact with the cooler might increase efficiency after a few heat cycles though...
