Friend ordered a MSI K7N2 board and Athlon 2600+ with Kingstong Hyper X PC3200. Problem is, when we swapped over the mb, cpu and hdd, installation went fine...boots up without a problem and starts the WinXP install fine. When we go to format the HDD, is makes a grinding noise and never finsihes properly. Ive tried resetting the mbr, partitions, etc. Still no luck with a successful reformat. I have also tried this on 3 different HDD's one of which was completely new out of the box. The other 2 I know work in other machines however, so im very confused. Neither work in this new one though.

I format the hdd's in other computers and transfer them to the new one and install winxp fine, but after a few days, the computer decides not to boot anymore. It gets to the winxp splash screen then you get a BSOD. Can anyone determine why this is happening? Could it be a board problem, or memory problem? I dont think that this could be a major factor, but I just cant format a dang HDD and I am stuck at a dead end for ideas!

Thanks for your help!

well yeah - it might be the mobo, being more specific - IDE controller... but it might be memory problem as well - try running memtest 86.

Hmmm I'm thinking dodgy PSU right away.

As the hardrives are all OK in other systems, an inadequate or fuxxored power supply might cause the grinding sound.

The other possibility is the IDE channels on the mobo (or IDE cables) to check for this swap out the mobo with another, if you can.

I'm afraid the only way to find the source is swapping out one part at a time.

Good luck.

PSU is 450W, and was the PSU for the previous system which worked ok. On a happy note, while I was waiting for some replies, I was staring at a IDE cable and decided to try that out and so far so good. Got it to format a small partition and successfull install of XP. Hopefully that was the trick. Thanks for the help so far. I appreciate it
