anyone here that can give me a list of components for a pc?

i use photoshop much and always have firefox, thunderbird and itunes open in the background. i also play games sometimes (like 4-5 hours a week). Games should play allright, doesnt have to be in the native 1680x1050 res.

current system:
-AXP 2400+ [2000Mhz (133x15) Stock but now OCed to 2200 (171x13)]
-512MB RAM also at 171 MHz
-9700Pro
-Abit AT7-Max
-Sb Live! 5.1
-DVD-Burner
-KB/Mouse etc.
-120GB HDD (PATA) (15GB free)
-250GB External HDD (20 GB free) [Quick Backups, Mirror, etc.]
-Dell 2005fpw
-Tv-Card

what i want:
-dual Core (OC? probably, dunno)
-much RAM (2GB?)
-nice MB
-HDD, min. 250GB, SATA
-PciE Graphics Card
-Power Supply

I will be using the DVD-Burner, 120GB HDD, Soundcard, monitor,Tv-Card, Case and KB/mouse from the current PC.

It would be nice if you could keep the costs below 700$

Try this for ram at least. It's a great deal on newegg right now. Just copy and paste into the search.

3800+ x2, ram posted above is good, Antec TruepowerII 550w psu, Asus A8N SLI motherboard, 7600gt or 6800gs video card, just givin you ideas, you either have to skimp somewhat on the cpu or the video card, as those will be the most expensive of the bunch, you could always go with a single core opty and OC it to hell and get a 7900gt, or the x2 or dual core opty and a 7600gt would still be schweet compared to what you have now.

For a budget upgrade, I would go with a non-sli mobo.

The 7600gt would kinda bend the budget. You might be able to pull it off with the above config.
 
For overclocking, I think it'll be a little more than your budget:

Both configs aren't listed with video cards. What games are you playing? Anything 3D intensive? I ask because for that budget it'll be a bit difficult to fit in a good video card into either of those configs. Unless you're buying used, I think you'll be breaking the budget if you need these components. Keep in mind though that I only used newegg in this little write-up; shop around and $5 dollars here, $10 dollars there should be enough to fit a decent videocard into there.

Give me an idea as to what games you'll be paying, and I'll see what'll fit your needs the best, and maybe work some of these components a bit to see if I can squeeze a little more money outta the config.

Yea guess your right, might be a bit easier on the budget without sli, i was thinking futureproof but the more I think about it the more it doesnt make sense in this case. Price to performance though I think the 6800gs might be your best bet.

Well, if you're able to bend the budget by that much, add an eVGA 7600GT for $174 (there are other models around the same price, it's really up to you) to either of the systems I spec'd out in the earlier post and you've got a great gaming machine.

Two problems with that setup: he wants dual core and you haven't selected a power supply. Did you also spec for only 1 gig of ram?

In my opinion your final spec should look something like this:
ASUS A8N-E $92
Fortron 450W $50
G.Skill 2x1gig PC3200 $140
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ $295
Seagate 250 SATA 3.0GB/S $95
eVGA 7600GT $174
Total: 846 (Including that $150 "bending of the budget")

Wee i'm quite convinced your an idiot. How did is crew up my dual core? It ran at 2.7Ghz steady for days. CS just kept giving me a hissy fit.

If you want to spend the extra money. Go with the 165 but that's a 175 dollar price jump.

Add another 100 Dollars for 2 gigs total of G skill ram and go with the Antec 550. It's what i'm running and works great.

Newegg is the only way to go. You'll be charged 20% more going to a local shop. Newegg is so cheap because they buy in Bulk

I'm not so sure how much of a discount you'll find locally, but do make sure to check out the parts from Monarch, Tigerdirect, and Zipzoomfly in addition to those on Newegg. They'll be just as good to deal with as Newegg, but might offer a little bit of a discount here and there. Either way, you're right, always worth a try :D
