I bought a computer back in august of 05. It was pretty good at the time, and ran me about 1400 canadian.

3.6ghz P4 800fsb
Saphire x800 pro 256mb PCIE
512mb x 2 duel channel kingston ram
MSI motherboard with ddr2 support ( lets just say it was ready for the future )

Its come time that I upgrade it. I have money, but im not bottomless. I can make the money if i truely need it but Id rather keep spending to a minimum with good performance.

I was looking at getting my x800 up to the x850 XT. People told me to get the x1600 but I actually saw benchmarks saying that it was equal to/worse than the x800 pro.

Honestly, Id love the x18xx or x19xx but hey, Not likely unless I can find it for less than 400 canadian.

I would also like the upgrade my processor (which would mean my mobo aswell)

I was thinking originally Intel's duo line up. but it was pricey. Heres my questions:

-What is AMD's answer to Intels duo lineup? Is it the X2 64bit line of processors?

PRICES CANADIAN
-INTEL BX80553940 PENTIUM D 940 3.20GHZ 800MHZ FSB 2x2MB LGA775 $235.92 - Good deal?

-AMD ADA4800CDBOX ATH 64 X2 DUAL-CORE 4800+ 2400MHZ SOCKET 939 110W - $366.87 - Good deal?

-AMD ADA4600BVBOX ATHLON 64 X2 DUAL-CORE 4600+ 2400MHZ SOCKET 939 (This has only 2x 512 L2 cache, Is this enough??) - $290.03 - Good deal?

Which is the best deal? Which would you recommend I get and what motherboard do you recommend? I am mainly a gamer. Doom3, HL2, FEAR, the usual. I need high preformance, has PCIE support and is ATI friendly.

-- One final question: If I get a 64bit processor will i need a 64bit version of Windows XP?

Thanks in advance everyone. I really hope I get some valuable answers. For the record the site Im looking at most are Vibecomputers.com and Tigerdirect.ca

Thanks again everyone.

My advice is to wait, there's no reason for you to upgrade the CPU right now. No new processor is going to give you a great edge in gaming, if you'll upgrade anything, get a bitchin' gfx card.
