Previously, i had an

xp1800+ (palimino)
640mb pc2100
gigabyte ga7vaxp ultra
9800pro (128mb) (cats 4.5)
Win2k (latest patches and updates)

and I got decent scores.
3dmark2001- 11,127
3dmark2003- 5090
Aquamark- 28,973

Now I just upgraded. My new system

xp2500+
1g (2x 512) pc3200 Kingston HyperX
Abit nf7-s2g
9800pro (128mb)(cats 4.7)
win2k (latest patches and updates)

And my scores are lower than my previous system

I adjusted my bios already, and i dont know what else to do to bring my system up to par of where it should be.

my bios were adjusted in the Abit SoftMenu as follows:

System Performance- Expert
FSB- 166
CPU Interface- Agressive
Memory Frequency- SPD (which sets it to 200mhz)
Memory Timings- Expert
~Row Active Delay- 6
~Ras to Cas Delay- 3
~Row Precharge Delay- 2
~Cas- 2.5 (cant set this to anything other than 2.5 or 3, their bios release problem)

And voltages across the board were upped to the next highest choice
I cant figure out what else to change to bring my scores up. Already had the AA and AF turned off. What else should I do?

not sure....I will try the older cats tomorrow

but looking through sandra, something just doesnt seem right with the ram and processor...even though they are set as they should be..

Probably may be the bios settings you set for overclocking. Just do the benchmarking with older Catalyst drivers and make your motherboard bios settings all regular. Then see what the scores end up to be.

You could also try downloading the newest Forceware chipset drivers. That may make the difference.

but did you reinstall Windows when you upgraded???? Or did you just pop the new HW in and turn it on? If you didn't re-install, i'd suggest you do so...

I was about to suggest thing :D

I noticed he didn't mention it.

Be sure to give your ram enough voltage to work properly. With my Mushkin ram I had to give it 2.7V to work right, but it likes 2.8V a lot better, and the ram isn't overclocked. I don't know how much Kingston likes, but I'm sure it's somewhat similar.

I had to bump my Corsair CMX512-3200Pro modules to 2.70v per Corsairs instructions, however that problem is usually manifested in system instability, not low benchmarks..... I'd do what blackrino9 suggested and if that doesn't help, a full OS install.

i completely repartitioned, reformatted the harddrive and did a clean install (im not that retarded not to :) )

Already on the latest Nforce drivers (no change)
Already did a cat rollback to 4.5 (no chnage)
Set my ram speeds to 166 to match my cpu (brought my marks up a little higher, but they are still lower than previous system's)

Does it matter what dimm slot the ram sticks are in? Currently they are in Dimm1 and 2
Code:
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
1 2 3

I will try taking the settings off of "Expert" and "Agressive" and putting them back to "optimal", as well as upping the ram voltage to 2.7/2.8

I would assume, and probably be wrong but in order to have the sticks run in Dual Channel they need to be in slot 1 and 3. I know on P4 mobos there are 4 slots and I have mine in 1 and 3. Stupid question but do you have your CPU's FSB set to 166 in the BIOS? Have you updated your BIOS? If you set your CPU FSB to 166 then run your RAM at 333Mhz @ 2-2-2-5, Athlons love tight timings. I wouldn't personally mess with your RAM voltages unless you are overclocking. Other than that, I don't know what's the problem. Seems like you might be overlooking a driver.

not sure where, but I read somewhere that the nForce2 chipset likes looser timings, like 2-2-2-11 (for some reason it likes the high tRAS), as a matter of fact, some people were saying it was the "golden setting"..... can't hurt to try, anyways...... and, like Major_A said, pop them sticks into DIMM1 and DIMM3, get that sucker in dual channel mode.

---Dave

i thought with Dual channel, it was pointless on an AMD setup
and dont the sticks have to be ecc'ed or something? not just normal sticks of ram?

yes, the processor is showing up with the FSB of 166 (correctly showing as a xp2500@1833)
and I cant get lower than 2.5 on the CAS (newer bios shoudl be able to fix that when they are released)

moved the sticks around, into #2 and #3 (so thats still dual channel)

ran abits flash menu and it says its up to date

also changed the memory timings to 2.5-2-2-5. Showed a little increase, but still boarderline

I installed the lastest Nforce Drivers off Nvidias site (4.27)
Looked in my device manager, there are 7 items listed as "nvidia xxxxxxx"

PCI system management v4.0.4.0
AGP host to pci bridge v3.7.7.0
Memory Controller (4 of these) v3.3.8.0
Ultra 400 memory controller v3.3.8.0

Dude, for real, DC definately helps, I think you're thinking of the A64 with on-die memory controller, the AXP definately benefits..... no special needs for ECC, you may be thinking of the A64 FX-51 which needs registered RAM, and try bumping the CAS back to 2 and bump tRAS up to 11, i'm sure this will help....

---Dave

EDIT: you say you moved them to DIMM2 and DIMM3, I believe on that board that is still single channel, you have to use DIMM1 and DIMM3 for DC

alright, the ram is in dim1 and dimm3. Some people have said the motherboard will say when the Dual Channel is enabled.....where does it say that? I have noticed absolutly NO DIFFERENCE when i placed them in slot 1 and 3 as opposed to 2 and 3 or 1 and 2.

And this mobo wont do cas2, only 2.5 and 3 (still waiting on a bios update to fix it, nf7-s2g)

set the tRAS to 11, and its the same results as if it was set to 5.

So, how much worse are these scores with the new machine.

You havent really changed much in your system, other then bump up your fsb and increase your cpu speed a bit.

And those benchmarks are really more dependant on the video card then most other stuff.

Some things to consider:
Are you using the same video card clock settings?
Are the ram timings the same between the two machines?
Are there errors showing up under Dxdiag for video?
When you benched that machine, did you have your drivers set to the same performance level as the new machine?

Well saying that there shouldnt be a big difference between an xp1800 palimino, and a 2500 barton seems kind of a rediculous statement. Same for pc2100 of kingston ValueRam and pc3200 hyperX.

xp1800 system scores-
3dmark2001- 11,127
3dmark2003- 5,090
Aquamark- 28,973

xp2500 system scores-
3dmark2001- 10,942
3dmark2003- 5,238
Aquamark- 26,529

but the point is, everything that plays a part in benchmarking has either been kept the same or was upgraded. So the scores shouldve gone up atleast a little bit. Since nothing went up (except the 2003 scores which I achieved after substantial tweaking of the ram settings), it has thrown a red flag of "its not right"

Get CPUZ and go to the Memory tab. There is a box that says Channel # and it should say either Single or Dual.

well it said dual

but i came to another conclusion....this motherboard is crap

put all the stuffs back into my gigabyte ga7vaxp ultra (kt400) and the scores are higher, like where i think they should be

3dmark2001- 14,668
3dmark2003- 5515
aquamark- 35,417

So now, to transfer it all back to the otherboard to back my stuff back up to reformat and move it all back to my kt400

So what should I do with the new board? RMA and give it another shot? or just sell it? Or try returning it? (bought it from ExcaliberPC.com last week)

Try to return it, if anything they should replace it with a new one. If you get that one back and it doesn't perform, then sell it on Ebay.

possibly thinking of holding off till their first bios update, give it one more chance then.
Then rma-ing it then selling it

Absolut, I'm in the same boat as you. I just got one of these, NF7-S2G, the other day and it runs like garbage.

XP 2500+ oc'd to 3200+
1 Gig pc-3200
EVGA 6800GT
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS

That setup scores me 32,000 in Aquamark, and Far Cry runs choppy. Same exact hardware on a regular NF7 scores 53,000.

There's definately something 'off' with this board. Fresh install of windows, it was never on the net so it's HIGHLY unlikely that it was a virus or spyware. I'm really leaning to the idea of it being a BIOS issue. Until they release one, it's gonna sit in it's box and wait. The performance was just TOO bad.

Um, why in the world is your CPU's FSB set to 133 when you are using a 2500+ chip? Did you try setting the FSB to 333 so the chip is shown as a 2500??

re read his post. he has the barton at a 166fsb, which is correct. 166x2=333. its double pumped. his settings are correct
