New computer question - CPUs

I'm looking to get a new computer. I'm probably going to go AMD.

The question is, should I get a 64 bit board so I can pop a better cpu in later, or get a 32 bit board/cpu (barton 3000 ish) and really limit any upgrade posibilities.

Or maybe I'm confused. Is AMD going to keep releasing new 32 bit cpus (3500,4000,4500,5000)? I'm thinking I should just get a 64 bit board, get a clawhammer and then in a year or two if there's a 64 bit OS hopefully my board will let me pop in the newest chip later. It just seems that the bartons are starting to plateau so I'm a little worried about spending the money on a mobo/cpu that I can't upgrade in a year, when for $100 more I can get a 64 bit cpu/mobo that will hopefully let me upgrade in 1-2 years. I usually try to get the newest socket board to give me some flexiability but in this case I'm not sure if it's worth jumping on board.

Please let me know what direction you went in if you purchased a mobo/cpu recently.

I'm pretty sure that no new cpus will come out for socket 462.

socket 754 will definatly go to 3700+ this year and probably continue a little farther, mainly for large VARs/OEMs.

I beleive s939 will be the A64's home for the remainder of it's natural life but i might be wrong.

That's what I was thinking. I might go w/ a s939 just so I have more options in the coming years.

best thing to do is to wait for the nforce 250 so you can have AGP and PCI lock.
