I have an eMachines computer I bought about a year back. I want a new computer, so I figured that I would try making one myself, for the first time. My hard drive on this eMachine has Windows XP on it. I would like to somehow get around paying for a whole new XP disc.

Lets say I get my computer built (Mobo, processor, memory, video card and all that other stuff). I'm thinking that I can format this hard drive before I transfer it to my newly built computer, and just use the recovery disc that came with this computer to load windows back on the hard drive once it is in my new computer.

Any help would be great! Thank you.

After you build the new computer, just start it up with the XP cd, and do a Windows Repair installation of it. That way you won't have to format your old drive, and you get to keep all of your data.

I've heard that you need to get a reactivation code or something like that by calling microsoft. Has anyone heard of that? If so, do I need to do that?

Yeah...you'll need to reactivate it through microsoft. there shouldn't be any problem though since it'll no longer be on your emachines computer.

you may have a problem if the disc requires a Emachines branded bios/mobo to be installed, i know the gateway discs are like that probly all the other major pc makers

Is it pretty easy to reactivate it? Will they just give me some kind of code that I will have to type in upon installation of xp? Or is there more to it?
Thanks for the help cookiem123

they'll just give you an activation code that XP will ask you to type in when you first boot up

oh yeah... I might have to have an eMachines mobo and all. Oh well, I'll probably just have to invest in a copy of XP. Oh and by the way, is windows 2000 cheaper than xp?

after you install xp, a little ballon willo come out from the taskbar asking u to activate windows. u can ethier activate from internet or call up micrsoft. u will tell them a code on the screen and they will give u have 25 charater code to type in. thats about it.
and make sure its OEM cd, not one of those recovery cd with the emachine logo and all that stuff on it. and no win2k is probably same price but maybe 15doller less.

xp pro and windows 2k should cost exactly the same. Anyone who has xp higher is full of it. They're both the same price from a distributor.

if you need to activate and yuo still have that emachine lyin around look on the back of the case for a windows xp sticker, that should have the code of look in yo emachines manual

Don't buy another disc. Just give microsoft a call. I've done this in the past and have had no problems (other than long wait times). My girlfriends computer's harddrive died and I had to reinstall on new drive. I just called microsoft up, told them my story, assured them that it wasn't installed on any other computer and they gave me what I needed.
