New Computer Locking up. Vid Card?

Ok so I went and picked up my processor from Fed Ex yesterday (damn signature requirement) and installed it in my comp. I installed Windows and all of my drivers and programs and software, and then I decided I wanted to play some games. I was playing some Sven Co-op with my friend, and all the sudden the computer hangs and the sound starts to loop. I rebooted and Windows said that my computer recovered from a serious error bla bla bla, and that it was caused by my video card (GeForce FX5200). So I did the whole driver cleaner process and I re-installed my video card drivers. After that it was fine for a bit then it hung again. I rebooted and checked my CPU temp in bios and it was at 39c, like it always is.

I am eventually going to get a BFG 6800gt oc when I save up enough money, but I was wondering if there is any sort of fix you guys can think of until then? Any motherboard bios updates that fix this problem (mobo in sig) ? Im using the 66.93's off of nVidia's site, and I used driver cleaner before re-installing them.

Are you overclocked? I would guess its either a driver or a PSU issue. The vid card might be the culprit, but I have never heard of a 5200 breaking, especially since it uses passive cooling.
 
For some reason I doubt its the PSU

I used this card with an even crappier PSU (Allied 250W, which I call crappy based off the PSU Sticky thread), and an ECS Elitegroup mobo and it never gave me any problems.

Also, I jus ran my computer for about 2 hours (web surfing, talking on aim, using winamp, using gimp) without any problems. My friend says he wants to play CS and it crashes within 2 min of playing.
 
Have you tried running prime95 to see if the cpu and motherboard is stable?
 
Did you oc your ram???

Maybe your ram is bad???

Unstable ram could cause a computer to loop and have trobule booting up.

A bad HD could do the same.

Try going into your bios and enabling the "fail-safe defaults."

If that doesn't work; signs tend to point to the psu.

Have you tried different video card drivers? Usually if a game hangs and it's the video card then it is the drivers.
 
Ok well I am gonna run Prime95 overnight and while im at school. If there aren't any errors, then what else could I possibly do?
I really do not think it is the power supply because this is not a very demanding video card and it worked perfectly fine on an Allied 250W. I can surf web, listen to music, talk on aim, use gimp, talk in ventrilo, I can do everything. But when I open up CS or Sven Co-op or anything like that, I get about 40secs-2 min before it hangs and the sound loops. I just recently did the whole driver cleaner process for the 3rd time and I installed some Omega drivers to see if that would fix it, but it didn't. I don't know if it is just half life and half life mods that do it because I don't have any other games on my computer atm.

Oh well....If I do Prime95 and it has any errors, then I know what the culprit is, but if it doesn't, I really have no idea.

Do so, and run memtest+ overnight
 
Ok...So I was letting it do Prime95 testing over night, and while I was at school. I came home to check on its progress and as soon as I pressed the monitor button, my computer turned off....

I got really scared for a few moments while I frantically tried to figure out what could have happened....My computer would not turn back on. I tried everything I knew to do when I got the idea that maybe my speakers were sucking too much juice from the outlet :rolleyes: . So I unplugged my speakers from the surge protector and it worked. I'm just about to test and see if this fixed all of my problems. I have my speakers plugged into a seperrate surge protector across the room now. I will report back in a few.

Well it was working fine for like 20 minutes and then the game hung again...Im out of ideas. Prime ran for like 13 hours or so and there were no errors.

Have you tried memtest86 ?
 
Do you have the latest chipset drivers installed? If so go ahead and reinstall them.

Also what driver versions have you tried with no success?
 
I will try reinstalling the chipset drivers tonight. I have tried the nVidia 66.93 WHQL drivers and I have tried the 61.77 Omega Drivers.
 
Ok I reinstalled latest chipset drivers from MSI's site after driver cleaning away all of my nvidia drivers (including forcewares). I installed the 67.03 forcewares from nVidias site and my games still lock up after minimal play time. I will download, and try to figure out how to run Memtest86 tonight.
 
I recently had exactly that same issue. I was fine doing anything I wanted to do on my PC for hours if I chose but as soon as I started the only game I was playing at the time (DAoC), I would do a hard lock in game before 5 minutes were up. After much hair pulling and teeth-gnashing, replacing the seemingly good PSU solved my problem.
I assume that the vid card, once it started ramping up for processing a 3D environment, starting needing juice that the PSU was no longer able to supply.


Just my experience.
 
You hit the monitor button and the tower turned off? Sounds like a power problem for sure.
 
Grrr....I really didn't want to have to replace the power supply. So much cable routing done.

Oh well....At least it wasnt the cpu or ram...

Well im using the power supply that came with my case right now, I have the other one all packaged and ready to RMA. I really hope that I get a non-faulty one back, because I jus tore apart a wiring job that took days.
