i just bought the parts and put together my new machine 2 weeks ago. it runs great but for some reason, while running cs1.6 and doom3, the computer will freeze for about 10 seconds then unfreeze. sometimes it goes for hours without it happening and sometimes it happens 3-4 times in 1 game. it will also happen when im on desktop talking on aim and not playing any games, so its not something that happens only while playing games. here are my specs.

amd64 3200+ winchester 939 socket (stock HSF)
eVGA nVidia 6800GT
1gig(2x512) kingston value ram PC3200 184 pin
Abit AV8 Mobo 939 socket
Western Digital 160GIG HD 7200 RPM
ThermalTake SilentPurePower 480W PSU

1 cooling fan on the side of the case sucking in and 2 on the back of the case blowing out

my 1st guess was over heating, but this happens when i turn on the comp after leaving it off over night as well as at the end of the day after it being on all day.

hopefully its not a hardware problem or something to do with the way i put together the comp, and can be fixed by a simple reformat.

if any of u have any idea on what is causing these freezes plz post or u can contact me in #1g on irc.gamesurge.net.

oh and BTW i disabled fast writes in AGP settings in bios, and its still doing it.

thanks a lot for your help, its greatly appreciated

Have you checked in your System Configuration Utility and made sure that no unexplained programs are being loaded at startup?

Open the device manager and look for errors.
Code:
Rightclick "My Computer" > Properties > HardWare Tab > Device Manager

1. We aren't your personal tech support. Do not present a pissed off attitude if no one jumps at the chance to troubleshoot your system. You are not royalty.

2. An idea has been presented to you (check device manager). Do it and see what it says.

3. Do you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard?

well thanks for your help everyone! (sarcasm)
Go take a rope and hang yourself. People have offered you ideas and you have yet to respond with a post mentioning either of them. As the above poster said, We aren't tech support.

Do you leave aim on when you are playing games? You shouldnt.

Do you use a firewall and/or antivirus? That could be the cause of it.

Latest drivers?

Have you run memtest? Maybe your ram isnt installed properly.

patriot and globalfear, i posted this 2 weeks ago and got 2 replys. this problem is frustrating the hell out of me and the 1 place i was told i could get help (these forums) isnt helping me. and global, your response was very immature. i have a valid reason to be mad, and what i said isnt even bad it does not deserve a "go get a rope and hang yourself" response. try to act respectfull and mature when posting.

and docer, i was told it could be my ram timings, i took out and put back my ram to see if that fixes it and it didnt. where can i download this "memtest" program? or if its not a program how do i do it?

Is your BIOS updated? ALL drivers installed, including chipset drivers? What is your grahics card, and what temperature is it at after exiting a game?

i checked the device manager and didnt find any errors. not sure if i have the latest chipset drivers for my mobo, i knw i installed the drivers from the mobo CD. i have the latest nvidia drivers. Docer, how do i run a memtest? or where do i get the program? and no i havnt updated my bios, ppl told me i shouldnt flash my bios and to do it only as a last resort. but im ready to do that cuz nothing else has worked. how do i "flash" my bios. i have an Abit av8 mobo (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-181&depa=0)

Watch out for your temperatures, it may be a heating problem of some component.

i dont think so, it happens right when i turn on my computer after leaving it on over night. also it happens when im out of game, happens when im on desktop or surfing sites.

Get the uGuru software and use the FlashMenu option. http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/utility.php?categories=1&model=175

Have you tried running your card at 4X instead of 8X?

I had a very similar problem as yours and it turned out to be my "fairly new" Antec 480 true PS. If you can swap yours out why not give it a try?
