Well it looks like I might be able to get the $1,000 computer after all. I kept most of my ideas from the first time, but I changed a few. What are your opinions on this setup?

Antec Performance Plus SOHO File Server Case $69
ASUS P4P800 SE $95
Pentium 4 3.0E 800 MHz FSB $183
Kingston ValueRAM Dual Channel DDR PC-3200 $140
XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT $205
Antec P4 ATX12V 400 Watt Power Supply $59
3 Enermax Themal Control 80mm Case Fans $11.25
Seagate 200GB 7200 RPM IDE Hard Drive $117
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD+RW Drive $61
Sony 1.44MB 3.5" FDD (Just In Case) $7
Windows XP Home Edition SP2 $93

With shipping and handling it comes to $1090. So does this look like a good computer to last me for a little while?

may be wise to go the pci-x way, along with 64 proc. whats ur current setup? it may be better to just save a bit more and get a better system

Currently I am just using a P4 1.5 and it sucks for anything I want to use it for now. I have a bunch of video editing stuff that I want to do soon and also play a few of the better games (HL2, Doom 3) . I was going to ask if I should look into the PCI Express setup, but I don't know much about it at all. PCI Express plays games that require AGP cards right? I would assume that they do. I would have to find another MB and Video Card that supports it. Is it something that will be required during the next year or two or will AGP still be alright? I am just trying to think about keeping the cost down. If it looks like it won't be required for at least a couple of years, then I would probably wait on it. That is unless I can get a good MB and Video Card for the same price or less as the ones I currently have selected.

Also, is the 64 processor that close to being a requirement? I haven't really seen much info about Intel doing a 64 processor real soon, but of course I haven't really looked hard. I know AMD has one out, but I would think that if software were going to require it anytime soon, that Intel would be onboard right now as well. Feel free to add any suggestions to this.

I did a quick check and Newegg is soldout of Intel PCI Express MB's. I checked out the AMD ones and they cost just a little to much for my liking. I pretty much will have to get all of my computer components from the same place. My wife's work will pay for the computer up front and just take out a few bucks out of her check for about 2 years. So my options are somewhat limited. So I probably will just stick with a setup similiar to what I put up there. If anyone has any other suggestions, feel free to speak your mind.

I know that this could be annoying, but i would heavily reccomend
athlon 64 3000+
and an a8n-sli, so that you can then get another 6600gt for pennies in a couple of years, and double performance

Sounds interesting, but just not going to be in my budget right now. It looks like those boards are around the $200 range and that is almost double what I can afford right now. Plus that appears to be better suited for strictly a gaming pc. I only play games on mine a small portion of the time. I spend most of my gaming time on my XBox. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I was checking out another site to buy parts from that I saw mentioned in another thread and found this deal for going PCI Express.

Chaintech SE6600G GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express 128MB DDR3 Video Card & Chaintech V915P Zenith VE 915P P4 800FSB LGA775 Motherboard Retail Bundle $269.99

That might be an option now. It has the video card I want, but I don't know much about that brand or model of the motherboard. Is that a good enough motherboard for me to get?

Here is a whole different setup using the PCI Express parts.

Intel Pentium® 4 530 Processor Prescott 3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, Socket 775, 1MB Cache Retail $189.90

Chaintech SE6600G GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express 128MB DDR3 Video Card & Chaintech V915P Zenith VE 915P P4 800FSB LGA775 Motherboard Retail Bundle $269.99

Kingston KVR400X64C3AK2/1G 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200 Memory Retail $147

Antec Performance II Series SX1040BII Soho File Server Case (Black) Retail $92

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3200822A 200GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive $119

NEC ND-3520A 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Bare Drive (Black) $64

Mitsumi MTM43WBLK 1.44MB 3.5in Internal Floppy Disk Drive (Black) $13.75

Enermax UC-8TCFB(V) 8cm Ball Bearing Fan w/Thermal Control for System Retail 2 each for $21.98

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Single Full Version OEM $86.99

That is a total of $1004.61. This is with ZipZoomFly. Everything except the case is listed as Free 2nd Day. Does that mean the shipping is totally free on these or is it a free upgrade from the Ground shipping? If it is free, then I only need to pay for the 2nd Day shipping for the case and that shouldn't be to bad. Regardless, I would save money on getting this system over the items I picked off of Newegg.

By the way, the case comes with the 400w Antec P/S and that is why I don't have one listed. It isn't quite as nice of a case, but maybe I can mess around with it later. Let me know what you all think of this setup compared to the other one.

Maybe with the extra savings, I might upgrade the CPU fan.
