new computer advice

so the time has come for me to get a new computer. I think im going to have monarch computer build it for me since that will only run me 49 dollars. here is the configuration im looking at right now:

Case: PS 430W - Antec Performance Plus 1080AMG $135.00
Case Fan: 80mm - Antec 80mm SmartCool Case Fan $15.99
Motherboard: Abit AV8-3rd Eye K8T800 Audio/GB-LAN/USB/ $139.00
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 90nm (939) $272.00
Heat Sink Fan: 130150 - Thermaltake A1772 AMD $35.00
Memory: DDR (400)- 1 GB (2 pcs 512) Corsair TwinX1024-3200XLPRO $274.00

Some specific things im unsure of is whether i should get that monitor. 410 dollars seems like a heck of a lot when i can get a killer 19 inch crt for 245. But i am in college and moving around with an lcd would be so much easier than a crt. Also, im wondering whether it makes sense to get the 36 gig raptor to hold my operating system, games, and my swap file. Or if i should just spend the hundred dollars on another very large 7200 rpm drive. Of course i would also like any and all advice that you can give about all my other components as well. Thanks so much for the help.

Are you looking to overclock? If you're not, you can save some cash on RAM but I would suggest getting Mushkin Level II Black if you Want to spend $270 on RAM. Maybe you should only have 1 HD and get a 6800 instead of the 6600, since your spending 1500 on the computer. BTW, get the Winchester 3500+, its about $20 more but its better.
 
is the winchester the .13 micron version? What is the advantage of getting that over the 90nm one?
 
Even though the raptor's fast, in benchmarks it does not perform that much better. I'd say you go and get a larger drive go for 160 -200 gb or you just save your money and keep the 200gb drive you have listed.

As for the monitor, it's a lot easier to get a crt monitor. From what i've heard, sometimes all the pixels on the screen do not work. It's also alot easier to hit over. LCD's may be easier to move around but they are also easier to break in transport compared to a CRT. The cost i think is a important factor. A good gaming lcd monitor should have a pixel refresh rate of under 15ms. Those are expensive. If you buy a 19" crt it will be less expensive than one of those.

While CRT's are cheaper, their other advantages over LCD are falling pretty fast.

These days you can get a LCD with a 16ms refresh time fairly inexpensively. That should be fast enough for most users.

Secondly, the color reproduction is getting better, and if you're not a photo pro, you won't even care really.

LCD's do use less power, take up less space, and if you have a DVI connector on the LCD, the picture is going to be a bit sharper as there won't be any of that Digital-Analog-Digital conversion going on (straight digital-digital).

The only real advantage for the average user to buy a CRT is the price. Even my sister who is cheap as hell bought a new LCD (a cheap one, but it's still LCD, and she doesn't do gaming).
 
Ehh, I have a hard time believing in LCD's. Even though my dad has dual 20.1 inches LCD's. My next buy would probably still be a CRT. There's no replacing my love for it. Size isn't a concern. In fact, I enjoy the CRT's extra heat. It warms up my room without the need for an electric heater on. So I guess I find these *weird* benefits. :)

NEC MultiSync monitors - the best. :) Besides, CRT's still own LCD's in response rate. My vision is very sensitive. I can still notice a difference between a 12 ms LCD and the good ol' 4 or 6 ms CRT's.

Whatever floats your boat. It's all good, just as long as you get a decent monitor. I'm itching to trade in my 19" NEC CRT for a 19" LCD, but the $$ is all going to save towards a house right now.

I'm kind of partial to LCD's because of LAN parties. That 19" CRT is a biatch to lug to parties!
