I have the task of pricing a new company server. We have a 5-10,000 budget for a workhorse server. We usually have 15 users accessing our current one and more in the future so that is why we are looking for another server. I am just wondering what ideas any of the forum members have. My boss wants something powerful and scalable. I am currently looking at some HP and Dell rack servers.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
 
i think more detail would be appropriate... what are you using it for would be the first question at hand...

you should look into creating a VMWare ESX Server that hosts a virtual environment :D

Indeed! We just started tinkering with this idea after getting a good deal on a HP 2 way quad core 2 ghz xeon server! :D
 
Dell 2950, dual 5355s, 16 gigs (4x4gb so you can expand if needed) of ram, 6 - 500 gig SATA drives (switch to SAS if you want faster/higher reliability drives) for 6-7k depending on where you get your quote.

What exactly is this server doing? AD, Exchange, File/Print, Web, App?

Specs may vary depending on what the op needs but yea a 2900 or a 2950 with a drac card would be a good choice. Maybe throw a lto2 drive in if you need a backup solution. What are you going to do with it and do you need the licensing for it? Also why enterprise of windows server std?
 
Ok, I am gathering info as my supervisor gives it to be because she isn't specific in needs she has to fill. She just wants something powerfull and can handle growth. We are running Win2k3 Standard Edition on are server right now.
 
e7130, not to be rude, but what qualifications do you have to be selecting this server? It sounds like you aren't even able to answer the commonly asked questions that we are presenting to you.
 
yea... kinda need to know what it's going to be doing...



from the sound of it, you need nothing more than an emachine from bestbuy. You say you have 15 users accessing it, i'm guess these are just file shares cause you are running server standard.... doesn't take much to be a file server for 15 people. Maybe it's not the server that's causing slowdowns, and it's the network.

Aren't able to answer the commonly asked questions? I've read through here and haven't seen any specific questions beside "what you plan to do with it" and like I have said my CIO hasn't decided exactly what she wants to do with it. I believe I stated that before. I just was wanting brand of servers the community think are quality. The customizing of them to fit the need I have no problem doing. I just didn't know if the community is in love with what Dell or HP had to offer as far as support and hardware.

It may have been premature to come on here and thread anything. Well good day
 
If it's just brand, I'd go Dell or HP, HP used to be king but Dell has really come on strong the last two gens, plus they're typically 10-20% cheaper then HP. Go with the poweredge line and custom order it once you've received more guidance on it's expectations. If you're not going to get that guidance, then just build a good all around box.

The problem is that particular question is the most important one when choosing a server.
Without a clear answer, no one can give good advice.

reading the entire threads).
get a handle on the terminology in that discussion and you will be ahead of the game AFAIK
both technology-wise and cost-wise

It will be replacing our current ENT Server HP Proliant ML370 terminal.
