I've come here mainly trying to get a few things answered.

my price range at MAX is $250 no tax included.

If i go single Gpu....I should go for xfx (warranty/oc friendly) 6950. I was also looking at going for a single msi twin frozer 560Gtx.

Would going with a 460/470 with 1528/1280mb memory size be better?

I was kinda interested in going sli though. If i do go sli / xfire what would be the best way to do it and stay under the $300 mark. Just looking for suggestions.

building a 2500k or 2600k SB build.

I am not aware of a gtx 460 1.5gb. Even if it were to exist, the card itself is not powerful enough to make use of that much memory.

A GTX 470 at standard prices is not worth getting over a HD 6950 (2gb) or a GTX 560 1gb (if you prefer to require Nvidia) for a single card solution. The extra vram might be a factor in isolated cases over the GTX 560 should you run it at AA/resolutions requiring SLI, and I stress might be.

Why are you interested in sli/xfire? The only reason really to go dual GPU is out of necessity (for instance for nvidia surround, you need more performance than any single card, better fps/cost ratio than a high end single card, already own an existing card, etc). There is no actual direct benefit of using dual GPUs only drawbacks.
 
SLI/Crossfire under $300 isn't really worth it, unless you can get a good deal on a pair of 460s. Personally though I'd go with a pair of HD6850s if you can stretch to that (something like $326 after rebate), as they're much faster than a pair of GTX460s, and a lot more efficient too (about 250W for the pair, as opposed to almost 350W with the 460s). How much video memory you need depends on what resolution you use.

For $250 after rebate your best buy is an HD6950 2GB, which you can try and unlock.
For $250 before rebate your best buy is a 1GB HD6950, with the GTX560Ti not far behind.
