The latest version of Chrome now has geolocation abilities built in. According to the news item, Chrome has had geolocation support since March but it wasn't activated by default until now.

With those words, posted Thursday at the bottom of a Chrome issue tracker item, the developer version of Google's browser catches up to Firefox with one important new component of the Web. That component, geolocation, lets a browser tell a Web site the location of a person's computer once the person has given permission.

I thought this has been around forever...Why would Chrome wait?

I always see those dang ads "Meet singles in your Area" and the area is in the correct place.

Why would we want this?

So Google can make more money on advertising because their statistics are more accurate. Also so that advertisers can trick stupid people through magically knowing where they are. You can meet hot wild college girls in your area, did you know that? Why wouldn't you want this capability!?

so if we use proxy/tunneling and hide our real ip address, this geothingy wont work properly then...

Should work like that. Also we aren't the ones falling for these dumb advertisements anyway so it would be no big loss for google.

The Geolocation still needs your ip address to get your location. How else is it going to find you?

I believe he means the ads use your IP, not the browser's geolocation. The browser isn't telling the ads where you are, the ads are figuring it out on their own based off of your IP.

I hate this concept...

using yr mobile update some website that you don't know posts this info (facebook, ...), someone that knows where you lives sees you are not at home... BAM

This is why I have disabled this on my N900, laptop browsers....

I kinda turn a blind eye to this as its pretty convenient to search a local store in google maps and have it automatically select one in my area, plus I can always block all the ads

^ This. The feature can be convenient. Who doesn't block all ads anyway?

All ads? Tsk tsk.

As for geolocations, it can be pretty useful. Searching for restaurants or services in your area would be simpler without needing to specify your location all the time. Yellowpage, Yellowbook and Superpage would know where you're at and help you find something locally too.

I think some of you guys are being paranoid as usual :-P

Yeah, I recall once when I was at work and two of my coworkers came bursting into the room: "we need plumbing supplies, now!" So I typed "plumbing supplies" into Bing, and bam: there's the addresses and phone numbers of five local plumbing shops. I printed out the list and they were off. Apparently they found what they were looking for at the second store on the list...not bad for a search that took five seconds.

Yep, all ads, as well as all flash except for a few sites like Newegg that uses it for their pictures. If the site is sane about their ads and I like it I'll let Google's text ads through since they're not obnoxious.
