I'm running a Sapphire Vapor x 7950 that has run its course. My build is a ASUS M5A97 LE R2 with an FX 8350, 16 gigs 2133 at 1920x1080. I'm wondering if any GTX 970 is sufficient upgrade? Should I just hold out for whatever I feel the best deal to be? Are there any specific 970s that just outdo the competition?

Considering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487076 ($290 atm). My price range is around $300.

Any advice would be great!
 
GTX 970 at $290? I don't see the value in that, if you want Nvidia specifically the GTX 1060 6GB is a better option at that price.

Really at the moment the consideration would be between a GTX 1060 and RX 480 if you want AMD, I'd say either choice is worth consideration depending on your preferences and buying situation/price on hand.

Last gen equivalent tier cards need to be significantly cheaper to be considered.
 
My recommendation is to get any of the aftermarket models of the GTX 1060 https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias... that do not have a blower style cooler. The 1060 is all around a better card than the 970. It's faster, uses a lot less power, has more VRAM for gaming at higher than 1080p resolutions, and will have better support for future API's.

Alternatively, the RX 480 wouldn't be a bad AMD option but after being through both AMD and NVIDIA cards over the last 8 years, I've had a better overall experience with NVIDIA. I also do go through a lot of graphics cards each year with both manufacturers. :)
 
I concur with the above statements. I am not partial to either but have found that I've had a better experience with nVidia lately. Still have my 7970 on a second system but the AMD software just seems to be a bit behind at times.
 
OP posted this 1 year ago lol, he probably doesn't need to upgrade anymore.
