Been ages since I upgraded my rig. What GPU would be best for a Q6600 for 1920x1200 res? I got a 880GTS 640 now. (SUPER OLD!)

No budget.

I play bf3, hitman absolution, skyrim, fc3 and whatever interesting might come outs.

You've waited this long, you might as well wait for ATI's newer cards coming out (I would anyway) in the first quarter of 2013. I'm sure Nvidia will follow suit as well.

most of those games will not play all that great with with a stock Q6600. and what does the rest of your system look like?

I should have asked how much you WANT to spend. I guess I will split it into price categories.

YOLO BITCHES I PWN TEH CODS! GET ON MY LEVEL! - Dual GTX 690s (assuming you have an SLI motherboard.
Bottlecapped? STFU Cannondale - Dual 7970s.
Wife won't kill me before the divorce - Dual 7870s or 7950s.
K, lets get real folks. I have a Q6600 - Upgrade your system.
I'm going to buy a new system when I move out of my moms basement and get a job - 7870.
I want good performance without breaking the piggy bank - 7850 or gtx 660.
Did I say budget? I meant to say "I actually have no money." - gtx 650ti or 7770.

at some point he needs to upgrade so why continue to wait when there are good deals with game bundles to be had right now?

Because he can actually upgrade at the beginning of a new product cycle?

That some point when he needs to upgrade would be a much greater/larger/better step up if he bought one 8950 when it comes out (in a month or two, three at most). Makes more sense to me anyway. I mean, I don't think a guy using a 4 year old video card is in too much of a rush and just can't (refuses to) wait 2-3 more months, but that's just my opinion.

But it is just my advice, he can do whatever the fuck he wants to do....lol.

Now my current specs are as follows.

CPU: Q6600
GPU: 1 x 8800GTS 640
RAM: 4GB DDR2
HDD: 150GB WD Raptor
PSU: Corsair HX620

Now I realize I have an old system, I just want to extend the life of this thing just for a little while longer. I haven't needed to use my comp for games in a while now, just occasionally will I game on my PC. Its mainly now used as my media center hooked to my TV. All my work is on my mac.

That being said I'm also going to replace my main HDD with an SSD, upgrade the ram to the max 8GB and just want to match that to the max video card I can get just to keep this rig humming for a little while.

In that case I would recommend a gtx 660. Its overkill for your CPU, but not such massive overkill that your wasting your money. It will also work well if you do build a new system and can be run in SLI in that new system if you want. The 7850 is also a great value, especially when overclocked. Lloose had a great write up there.

first we have no proof that the new cards will be out in 2 to 3 months. next when the new cards do come out they will be priced much higher than the cards they will replace now. just like the 7870 was a crazy 350 bucks at launch but can now be had for under 200 bucks on sale and comes with 2 current games. so again it makes no sense at all for someone like him to keep waiting when it comes to getting a gpu. he can get a massive upgrade now over his old card for a relaively small amount of money. his cpu is going to severally limit the performance of any card over 200 bucks anyway.

7850 2gb would be a great card for you, you could always add a second for crossfire later (after you do a cpu/mobo upgrade) and have plenty of power to play anything you want for a couple years on your single monitor.

You are going to be upgrading your CPU and motherboard in the future if you are thinking about building a new rig, but there are components that will stay, such as the new HDD/SSD and ram you are buying.

Since your CPU is a huge bottleneck, and you just want to extend the lifeline of your old computer, there is no point in getting a flagship card at the moment. This is what I would do.

1) Spend around 200~250$ and shop around for a used video card.
As a reference price point, a brand new MSI 660 TI were going for 240 after rebate on newegg.

If you REALLY hurry, this guy is selling three Diamond 7970's for 275$ each. Two are sold and 1 remains.

Snag it before someone who reads this post does, and when the time comes you can definitely sell it for this price when upgrading.

2) Buy a new SSD that is fast and futureproof for at least 1 year- this will carry into your new build. Either get an older generation 256gb Samsung 830 / Crucial M4 for sale price (165$ is the average) or get the new Samsung 840 pro when it goes on sale.

3) If you are going a single card build, your psu is excellent. Do not worry about it.

4) 20-30$ will get you 8 gigs of DDR3 ram @ 1600. Make sure its 1.5v or below.

I'd pick up a used 660 ti on ebay or the forum. Great cards for the price especially at your resolution and it'll fit right in when you're ready to upgrade your system. You might be able to grab one for around $200.

I think you should look into getting an SSD
um that's the last thing he needs if he just wants to improve gaming. he needs a new gpu and eventually a better overall platform before worrying about an ssd.

I'd look into upgrading from that Q6600. You're system is too old now for a simple video card change out.

I think anything past a GTX 560 (non Ti) will be a waste of money. If my i3 2100 was bottlenecking my GTX 460, then a Q6600 is going to botteneck anything about a GTX 460 as well.

Buy a $50 z67 motherboard and a second-hand i5 2400 (for $100) before you think about blowing $300 on a video card.

This is very interesting. The largest bottleneck I've been told has been the CPU so I might reconsider purchasing a new MOBO/RAM/CPU combo to compliment a new GPU. (probably new psu as well)

hmm dont think at high res cpu has anything to do with it.. i can check during games i have a box that runs fine with q6600 but maybe my version of fine and obbssesssed isnt ;) seems smooth max res 4890 (old card with old q6600 stock) 1920x1200 high detail on nfsmw new game love the game. thinking of upgrading for all the shadows and reflections turned on ;P
