hey guys i just got a canon rebel T2i for Christmas!! woot.
i was wondering if there are any big photography forums out there that i should know about? (e.g. what headfi is to headphones)

also i was wondering what lens you guys would recommend getting? i was thinking about a fixed focal length lens and one that can take really good low light shots quickly.

btw edit:

this is my first dlsr

Congrats man! I just got the same camera a few weeks ago. One lens I do recommend is:

i had some quick general questions about this bag (case logic SLRC 205) and the camera if anyone knows.

1. i read a lot about this bag Caselogic SLRC-205doing well out side but how do you think it would fair at a theme park like disneyland or knotts berry farm? e.g. would it be able to protect the camera on roller coasters, and could i safely store bottled water in the extra storage compartment without worrying about the camera?

2. I’m going to be getting a couple of lenses (possibly a 70-300 or maybe a lens with slightly less zoom like a 255mm, and one or two fixed focal length lenses like a 25mm and a 50mm). how many lenses could you fit in this bag on along with the camera?

3. Ive read some reviews about the camera being uncomfortable on people but looking at the pics and video i don’t see how. being 6.2 would the bag fit well?

4. how is the stitching on the bag especially where the strap meets the bag? i read some reviews stating it looked weak and they were worried about how long it would last them.

5. what screen protector would you recommend? should i put an invisible shield on the LCD screen or do you guys have a better solution?

6. last but not least, what are some other bags that are good for keeping a camera safe on the go. one thing i really like about this bag is it doesn't look like a DSLR bag at first glance but if there are some that keep the camera safer or are better id like to look at them.

The best camera case for on the go.

Starter camera lenses tend to be:
18-55mm
55-250mm
50mm 1.8

They get you going and are phenomenal lenses for their price. I'm guessing you got the T2i with the 18-55mm, and not just the body. Depending on what you find yourself doing the most, there are plenty of lenses to choose from in the Canon/Sigma/Tamron line.

If you do lots of indoor stuff, I'd upgrade the 18-55mm to a Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS HSM or if you have the funds, the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM. Don't get me wrong, the kit lens has great optical quality and IS to boot, but a 2.8 aperture across the zoom range brings in some great photos with the versatility that a prime lens lacks. I'd still carry around a 50mm prime or maybe a 30mm prime for those moments you have time to switch lenses.

If you like to be more outdoorsy, I'd start looking into the magic 70-200mm L zooms. You've got some choices, f2.8 or f4 with IS or without. For around $550 used the70-200mm 4L is optically unsurpassed. If you need just a little bit more reach, you could grab the Canon 70-300mm IS USM. Honestly, with 18MP on the T2i, I'd rather crop an image down while using the 70-200 4L, because that resulting 8MP picture will still be unbelievable.

If you like doing interior photography, learn to do panoramas with a panoramic tripod head or grab any one of the ultra wide angle lenses. You will get different responses from so many different people on this one, but that is only because there are lots of good choices.
Canon 10-22mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Tokina 12-24mm, Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 8-16mm

As for primes, dang near all of em are good. The nifty fifty or fantastic plastic (50mm 1.8) is a great way to experiment with primes. the 85mm f1.8 USM is an optic wonder along with the 100mm f2 USM. The 100mm f2.8 Macro is a bug watchers wet dream. The 60mm f2.8 Macro is just as well recommended too, with less reach though.

If you ever get into tripod photography (where you actually make some time to take a photo), Tilt-Shift lenses are the cat's meow.

So yeah, lenses are exceptionally important, but not as important as lighting. If you have the money, get a 580ex II or for half the price Sigma DG 530 Super. I personally would never bother with a 270ex, but a 430ex may do well in lots of environments. The power and flexibility you have with the Sigma DG 530 or the Canon 580ex is simply priceless. If you want lots of "keeper" shots (ones you end up keeping) do yourself a favor and get a flash before any extra lenses.

Learn to use your camera, learn about light and digital imaging, experiment with composition and you will be well on your way to happy photos :D

dpreview.com is a fantastic website with a great forum. Imaging-resource.com is another favorite of mine. Also grab yourself a spare battery, doesn't matter what brand. Just have it charged and use as a secondary battery should your primary one drain or simply fail on you. They are dirt cheap from amazon.

And for a fast card, grab one of these guys. Transcend are blazing fast and cheap. I have a 16gb and 8gb and they fill up fast when doing RAW + JPEG.

Also, I'm jealous that you have a T2i and I have only a T1i. I'm working on some video stuff and really wish I had the 720p 60fps you have :( My plan is to find a brand new 5D Mark II lying in a cardboard box on the side of the road one day that someone intentionally left there for me to have, cause hoping on having enough money isn't happening anytime soon.

ENJOY THE CAMERA!!!

I have the same camera and these are the same lenses I have so I'll second them. They're great to start out with and you can do a lot with them. I also have a cheap set of diopters to play around with macro photography (I shoot everything from landscapes, to lightning, to grains of sand.) I picked up the 430EX II flash and it's wonderful, except I need a diffuser.

I just bought a photo printer (delivered today!) and can't wait to put some of my shots into print.

Enjoy the camera. I love mine to death.
