Just built a machine and it turns on, the RAM is the corsair Xpert display and that lights up, the PSU has an led and that lights up, all the fans are spining BUT I don't even get any text on the monitor.

The Monitor works, just took it from my other machine and the power is on etc, it is hooked up to a new BFG 7800 GT via DVI in the correct DVI port (there are 2 on this card) and nothing even shows up.

I didn't here any beeps becuase I did not install the pc speaker.....

Any guesses on where to start?

i would try taking everything out, and putting it back in piece by piece. this has solved a lot of porblems for me, but im by no means a pro

do u hear any beeps from the mobo? try reseating and ur video card and reconnecting the connneciton to the monitor

Let me give that a try. Also I bought an AMD Dual Core and installed it with the heatsink that was in the box. I noticed it had a thermal pad but not thermal grease. could that be the problem? I will reseat the video card and try again.

Also no beeps from the mobo but again I do not have the case speaker installed (can't seem to find it after I took apart the entire case) and the green asus light is on showing that the mobo is working. One thing I did notice is that althought i know I hooked up the power button light correctly I do not see it light up on front of the case...

anyway let me give the other things a try

the thermal pad should not be a problem

Ok reseating card and still same problem.

My hardware:

Silverstone TJ 03 (I don't think it comes with a case speaker)
Asus Premium A8N SLI Mobo
Hyper Type R 580 PSU
Corsair Extreme 3200 2 gig (512x4) 2 of the sticks are the LED display ones but all have same cas settings and timings
Plextor 716 DVD Sata version
WD Raptor Sata
Stock fans
BFG 7800 GT 256 MB

Logitech wireless mouse keyboard
Samsung 191T LCD

the cd rom tray opens and closes SATA 2 booting with XP CD
the fans light up
the Ram lights up (like a xmas tree)
the HD gives a click or two but it is bare SATA 1

I didn't hook up the USB cables or firewire yet but that should not matter, and as I said earler I notice the power LED does not light up on the front of the case nor can i hold the power button for 4 sseconds and turn off like the asus manual says and the reset button does not do anything but not sure if that just resets the OS anyway of which I do not have installed yet

When it on and does not POST if I unplug and plug in the DVI cable again my monitor source light turns solid (blinks when no signal) and the screen looks like it is lit up and about to display something but then it goes dark and the source light blinks again...the fan on the video card is running as well if that means anything

Generally when hardware fails on this level I rely on beep codes for guidence.
Can you barrow a speaker?

Or try:
Try another vid card in the new system.
Try your new vid card in another system.

I have a speaker, found one, and it does not beep at all. I fixed the power button light problem, i had the 3 pin wire installed up side down (tricky working on a tower case when the pics in the book show it desktop table config)

mmm what is the watage on the PSU and u did plug the vid card in right? maybe the psu cant supply enough power for this rigs graphics card?

oh yeah is the mobo set to single card mode?

edit: googled this and apparently its a semi-common problem. lots of links to various forum threads...

Hiper Type R 580 Watt. I pluged the 24 bin power connector into the motherboard and plugged the 6pin PCI E plug into the BFG card....

I have tried everything. Reseated the CPU, Reseated the heat sink, reseated my sound blaster, reseated the video card, reseated the RAM,

Man I was hoping to use my new machine tonight....

dude I totaly hear you I would be a bit bummed too. cmon peeps lets get this rig up and get our brother gaming!

I'm still checking stuff bbialb w/more (hopefully).

Thank you :)

Thing is I have another AGP card but this mobo is too advanced for agp

And I don't have another PCI E machine to test this video card in. I really don't think that my card is bad, I mean it could be, but I think it might be something else...

Would clearing the CMOS do anything? I know this MOBO has a self CPR mode so no sure

you are basically going to have to try everything you can 1 by 1.. if you have extra memory, try it.. if you had an extra vid card, try it.. psu, cpu.. swap everything out 1 by 1 until the comptuer works..

also.. take the motherboard out.. put it on a non-conductive surface.. a wood table would be good.. and hook up the minimum required things for it to post.. psu, memory, cpu, video.. that's it.. 1 stick of memory at a time too..

Yeah but I would like to rule out some of the possibilites since I do have some facts:

Fact: the machine powers on, RAM powers on display temp\freq etc\hard drive spins, cd spins and ejects, the video cars fan spins

So can't I rule out that my mobo has a short ?
Can't I rule out that i do not have bad ram?
can't i rule out the psu does not work ?

etc.

after reading about 20 posts on this I get the impretion that this mobo has extreme demands on the psu, not for raw wattage but for an uber stable 12v rail.

might try a different PSU, and try to set up the system with an ide hdd as the sata dvd and hdd might be a problem (from what i read sata is a sore spot but usualy it crops up in driver issues not the no post error).

have you tried to get it to post with no dvd or hdd hooked up? thats a quick and dirty (i.e. not totaly accurate but somewhat helpfull) check for a power or hardware issue.

google this you will find alot of info.

in replyu to your last, no you cant all those things inter relate, a mobo can have a bad chip and still light up and and even post and stuff.

and yes deffinatly reset cmos. reset it after trying different configs even, though im not sure if reseting over and over hurts a mobo i have had to do it and the comp ran ok afterwards. anyone know if theres a limit or threshhold after withc reseting cmos has any negative effects on mobo?

first thing reset cmos and try the bare min post just suggested by scott.

Think I might start RMA'ing.

I called BFG they said that board could use a bios upgrade (I don't think so, a bios upgrade would fix maybe some issues with SLI but a bios upgrade just to POST ? )

Also I cleared the CMOS and nothing. I unplugged all the drives and just was booting off CPU and RAM and Video and same behavior.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have been working on this for 4 hours and now I need a rest.

Try a different power supply if u have one had near the same problem myself after cleaning a system when i put it back together all the fans fired up but it wouldnt post after much testing of this switching of that it turned out to be a solder point on the power supply broke clear fixed it and it and it booted right up. worth a shot anyhow.........good luck ;)

Try unplugging everything that's unnecessary (fans, hard drive, dvd-rom, pci cards). Put in 1 stick of ram, and the video card. Try to boot it up. This should narrow down the problem. If it's a psu issue, it may boot up when only a couple components are connected.

Did you plug in a speaker to the green stereo plug?

This also happened to me on my first built. I have an A8N SLI Premium too and it has a voice POST Reporter feature. If you have a speaker plugged into the mb it should tell you what failed. I found out that my video card was DOA through the voice reporter even though it's fan was spinning.

what bios rev is it? I read today on a forum that the .01 bois rev wont post with a venice core. not sure if its true but u might check it out. rma sounds like the most likely solution though...

Ive seen systems show signs of them getting power spinning up and no video on the screen due to faulty ram, try a generic stick or ram, make sure the ram you have is compatible with the mobo. some are picky. My asus board only have a few models of pc400 its compatible with.

I had the same problem with my computer. I can't quite remember what I did to fix it, but make sure you are coming out of the right DVI port... one of them is off by default I think. Try switching to different outputs.

If the system is not posting, there should be beeps. Also, just because a light is on, doesn't mean that its working. I would suggest triple checking to make sure that speaker is hooked up to the motherboard properly, then take everything out... everything. Try with just the power supply, motherboard, cpu, and speaker. If you don't get any beeps, then it is one of these components. Make sure processor is fully seated, double check for shorts... heck, take the motherboard out of the case and hook it up to the P/S (on a nonconductive surface, of course).

Might not hurt to try a different speaker. Its possible that the one you found isn't working.

good luck

i had a similar problem to the one you are having a few weeks ago. i RMA'ed everything, motherboard, hard drive, video card, and power supply. after i got all that ish back, it STILL would'nt work. alas, i was just messing around and i took the jumper out of my hard drive, stuck it in master, and it booted up. i then put it back on CS and it worked just fine. i have NO idea wtf caused it, but after that it worked properly again.

Angeleyes may be on to something. I called Asus and they said that although my board was made in July it has 1005 bios which DOES NOT support X2 Dual Core chips, I need 1007 or better. Really stinks and now i had to pop my bios chip out and send it in for $5 they reflash it.....

...I will report back if that works but I feel good that it will

What did your BIOS chip rea on it? Mine has 2 written over the top half in black magic marker. I read off the bottom 2 lines exactly, and what I could make out of the top line and to Asus tech support and the guy didn't know. He's supposed to have another tech call me (yeah right).

I don't have it in my possession now since it is at Asus but I recall that the second line lists the BIOS version, mine was 1005 and I needed 1007 for it to work

the thermal pad should not be a problem

unless youve dismounted it after the phase change
they are one time use TIMs (Thermal Interface Material)
thus they "melt" to create as good thermal transfer, but once set arent designed to be reset again

if for any reason you need to remount the heatsink you have to remove the pad residue
(many actually relap the heatsink at that point) and employ thermal grease
acetone, or isopropyl alcohol would be your common cleaners of choice
