Im sick of barely getting by on old hardware and my gaming rig. so ive decided to budget for a new build and i was wanting some input, i wish i could afford a 4p boxen but it looks like its going to be a 2p boxen, looking at going with dual 6272's with an asus kgpe-d16 mb.

my main question was, is this a good choice of hardware for the money or do you all recommend something else along this price range of 1600 that would out perform this system

Thanks

Keep you eyes on eBay - there have been 6180SEs listed for right about the same price, and would be a much better (higher ppd, lower power usage) processor for you. Any Magny Cours from about a 6174 will beat or exceed the IL chips in ppd and use less power.

Also, you may want to look into SuperMicro's 2p G34 offerings. No promises or anything, but those may be overclockable.

Do you have any parts to recycle? Because you could get a 4P supermicro board for around $640 new, and a pair of dodeca's for around $400 a piece so about $1440 without tax and shipping. This would allow you access to the OC, and give you an upgrade path as the prices on chips fall. It is also close to the budget you want to stay in. $640 for board, $800 for CPU's, $120 for ram, $100 PSU, Fold naked $0, 4 Hyper 212's Musky modded $70-100. That is around $1760, and could be reduced if you already have some parts to use. Now you could get the 8 cores for around $100 per CPU which would bring you down to around $1360 for a fully populated overclockable 4P 32 core machine (up from 24 cores).

Edit: Magny-Cours CPU's

as for recycled parts i have 4 h70's that i had purchased bulk off ebay for 200$ a few months ago and i work at a place that has a fully working machine shop so i was thinking about designing some brackets that would work with the g34 socket. I do plan on folding naked for the time being, i have plenty of spare harddrives and what not, the only other thing would be ram. Thanks for the input guys

well i just snagged a supermicro H8QGi+-F and 4x 6172's and 32gb of kingston hyperx ram . The parts wont be in until monday it looks like so im going to get started on fabing some mounting brackets and backplates for these h70's. Any idea what my avg ppd will be with this new rig? and yes i totally blew my budget but oh well :S

---edit---
also just a quick question i have a 550w psu from a tyan system as well as a corsair ax750, do you think i can get away with using that 550w or would it be better to play it safe with 750w

Hey crashbox, I also have some H70. wonder if you could help with the brackets :)

just so you know i am no machinist or anything of the sort but we do have a few mazak cnc lathes and some hypertherm waterjet machines around the shop with plenty of scrap aluminium so i figured id give it a go, if they turn out good then yes i will be more than happy to help out fellow [H] folders

At stock clocks, I was pulling about 560w or so with my 4x6174 with an SM board. I'd expect your 6172's to be in a similar range. I was using an ax750 at the time. So, at stock, you will be pushing the 550w psu. Personally, I'd switch to the ax750 if you can.

You were pretty easy to convince.. :)

4 x 6172s @ 2.36 (12.5% o/c) pulled 605W at the wall with a Seasonic x650. I'd definitely advise swapping to the AX750.

thanks for the heads up musky and firedfly. I was ok with my i7 2600k and 2 xeon l5520's until i hit the 1mil mark last week, now i have this "need" to do more and since i got a raise at work i figured what the hell
