I'm so frustrated and tired after redoing doing my system and it won't friggin post.

My old system is in my signature, I'm reusing most of those parts which all work perfectly.

Only new stuff I bought was:

-New Lian Li A3 case
-9800X3D CPU
-B850 Gigabyte motherboard
-WD850 nvme drive

Everything else is reused from my current build, which is:

RTX-4080 FE
32gb DDR5 memory
Seasonic 1300w PSU
Kraken Z73 cooler

Ok I take the parts out of my old case. Then setup the new case, install the motherboard and coolers and PSU. Wow this case is much smaller and cramped everything tight in there, but it all fits and I love the size and smaller form factor.

Finally get it all together and wired up and everything connected. I do a quick power button press and ever turns on and lights up.

Ok good

I bring the new case down to my computer room, plug in
the monitor and keyboard + mouse, etc... turn it on again, everything lights up, all fans and video card working.

Monitor is turned on, it shows display port on the screen, and nothing else. Waiting ...

2 minutes goes by, monitor is dark, but system running.

I turn off the computer and restart it. Same thing monitor just black besides showing the display port signal for a few seconds on screen and nothing else. Keyboard doesn't light up or anything.

I turn open the case and check that memory is seated properly. I take video card and reseat it. I took the drive out and tested it, etc... everything was in correctly nice and snug.

Turn it on again, same thing. Computer powers up and all fans and lights working, but nothing else, it won't post or even go to BIOS.

Ugh...worked on this all afternoon/ evening and I just can't figure this out. And I've built gaming rigs for myself every few years for the past 20+ years and they always work.

One off thing I couldn't get right was the case wire to the motherboard ( Fpnl ) front panel powe that connects to the little prongs on the corner of the mobo didn't seem to plug in per the diagram on the instructions, as if a capacitor was in the way a bit. I had to move it a little further for on that prong part. But it just work because with I press the power button on the case it turns on it off.

Anyways, what could the use be?

No idea what the problem is. I would try pulling the CMOS for a few minutes. Then use the boards video out to my monitor if it is available. Then I would try to power on again giving it up to 15 minutes to boot.

I have a 7800X3d on a X670E and I will freely admit that it has wonky boot sequences sometimes. I will restart Win11 and randomly it will black screen for a few minutes in between restarts.

Good luck, hopefully nothing is borked.

How do I clear CMOS again?

I usually just pull the battery for a while. Some people pull battery then try to power the board on to drain the caps. (Not hooked up to the wall while doing so.)

I would suggest booting on the bench, with only CPU, one stick of RAM and basic GPU if you have one lying around, a GPU without any external power connectors. That will verify your basic setup before you go any further and connect SSD, main GPU, case and so on.

did you not bench test it before jamming it into the tiny case? have you tried the onboard video ports?

Yes I tried the onboard display port connection direct on the motherboard. That made no difference.

This morning I'll try the minimal setups.

No video card installed just the onboard video

1 stick of memory see if that's an issue

Take out the hard drive

I'll try each of those separately see what happens

I think it might be the motherboard bad. As the video card I am reusing and it's been perfect. Il also reusing my memory sticks which never had a problem. My PSU is brand new as of a year ago and it's worked perfectly.

Alright then, getting somewhere ;)

I took out the video card and tried it with onboard video. Rebooted and Nope

Took out the harddrive and tried it. Rebooted and Nope.

I took out both sticks of ram, and then popped just stick in and this time moved it also to a different now front slot 1. And...YES computer immediately sounded different and quieter booting up and I saw my keyboard light up which it didn't earlier at all. Monitor showed the post screen about to go into BIOS.

I turn it off then.

Still early I went back to bed now. But once up and ready I'll pop the second stick and try that. And if that works I'll put everything back in.

All my previous builds, I used to separate the memory sticks so like slot 1 and slot 3, I never would put them side by side. But maybe on this motherboard I'm supposed to

Installing Windows right now, currently both sticks in slot A1 and A2

I'll change to A2 and B2 later.

Good plan. That's great that you have onboard graphics, just try with that on the bench. Add one item after another, testing POST every single time, until you have all parts installed. Only then install it in the case.
If you're suspecting bad mobo, do some serious stress testing while on the bench, test all RAM sticks in every possible slot, that will save you time removing it from the case again, if something is indeed faulty.

Get yourself one of these open test bench at $20.00 it's easy to build out and test for a couple weeks before going through the grief of trouble shooting inside the case. I test every single build this way before the final assembly to alleviate the pain of faulty hardware diagnosis.

So now that my system is up and running I installed WoW again, my most played game still.

I play @ 3440 X 1440 res on my OLED screen all max ultra settings and 8xAA

I wanted to test the low fps in the cities which always bogged down for me. Normally on my Intel flying around the city my fps would drop down to 50 to 70 fps, but other areas always high frames, but the crowded cities always slowed my system down.

Now I'm seeing 120 to 130 fps in those same areas.

One thing I didn't realize at the moment, but when I installed Windows I did the N version not Pro.

Typically I go with Windows 11 Pro, but I'm on Windows 11 N.

Is that a problem or bad for gaming?

Not in the mood to do another fresh clean install of Windows.

Only issue or funkiness I have with the N version is some media files not working. Like default Windows Photos for non jpeg pics, or Windows Media player.

And a weird audio issue with video playback in Firefox, but not in Chrome. But YouTube works perfect on both Firefox and Chrome on this new build, it's just sites like Facebook or other non YouTube videos sites on Firefox only I get no sound.

Chrome everything works 100% normal, but Firefox only YouTube works with audio and video but not other sites.

Or should I bite the bullet and reinstall Windows 11 fresh, selecting the Pro version? Just not in the mood and hassle after I have everything dialed in well now already.

did you google what N is?
thats the point... it has media, security and apps striped out to meet EU demands.

Yeah found that out the hard way. LOL.

Now what?

Stick with N and side load these features if possible? Or just do a fresh install again?

install klite codec pack and see how it is after, then decide?

I bit the bullet, bought Windows 11 Pro USB @ Best Buy this morning, as I couldn't find my old key info from years ago.

I even called Microsoft several times have them verify my account info and told them I changed hardware but it's still me same account, etc... holy cow 3 different calls, each 30 to 45 minutes long and got nowhere with them finding my old key or giving me a new activation account. Put on hold several times for 10 minutes, then they'd hang up, I would have to call again.

So I used an old Best Buy Gift Card I had from last summer, and bought a new W11P USB.

Rebooted to BIOS, boot from USB and installing fresh clean install Windows 11 Pro right now.

Yeah this made a big difference, and Auto HDR works now too, and all websites play sound, and for some reason the system feels smoother. Games look better too.

I am now running Windows 11 Pro, fully activated.

And officially activated, as before I couldn't find my product activation key, so Windows 11 N was not official and seemed to limit some settings and options. This is much better.

It's funny, I have a pretty powerful system, and what game and I playing most now? Quake 2 Remastered. Game looks sweet on a 45" Ultrawide and the smooth OLED display. I used to play QII "back in the day" and to see it played like this today would have blown my freaking mind.

Yes I also installed Doom ( 2016 ) and Eternal, and those look amazing graphics, but Quake 2 is so FUN

Didn't like such a small case Lian Li A3, so I got an extremely similar looking case, but bigger, the Fractal Design North XL

I moved all my components from the Lian Li into the Fractal North, only "change" being the motherboard, and memory, I went from a Gigabyte mini B850 to a full size mobo MSI 870E Tomahawk, and from 32GB DDR5 32cas T-Force memory, to 64GB DDR5 30cas Corsair Vengeance everything else is the same gear.

My question, is it ok I didn't do a full system wipe and stayed with the same Windows 11 Pro I had in my previous system?

After working on transferring everything into the case, brand new motherboard and stuff, making sure everything was all plugged in correctly and carefully doing my best at clean wiring, she booted up first time like it was meant to be 😎

MSI software drivers stuff popped up right away once in Windows, I downloaded and installed and rebooted, and everything seems to be working just fine, zero issues.

I was just worried I thought when changing computer components you should do a clean drive wipe and do a fresh install of Windows, but is that not needed when only changing the motherboard? But is still the same CPU 9800X3D, same video card, same harddrive, same power supply as before.

Opinions?

These aren't my pics, but it's the same case and mine looks just like them;

Gaming in this new case, with a Kraken 360 cooler for my 9800X3D the temps show like high 40s / low to mid 50s. Is that ok?

Been playing WoW TWW expansion, full maxed graphics, ultra AA, nVid control panel tweaked to give highest quality image, 200+ fps games looks great on OLED.

So playing this for an hour and my cooler display says like 45c to 65c for the CPU, but mostly in the mid 50s.
