New build won't POST

Hey guys,

Hoping someone might be able to give me some help here. Just built a new rig with the following parts:

Silverstone SG05 (w/ 450w, USB3.0)
Asrock Z87e-itx
i5 4570
2x4gb Crucial Ballistix RAM
Geforce 760
Samsung 840 EVO

Just went to power on for the first time with all components connected, and the system powered on (fans, LEDs), then off, then came back on, then off, then on, then off, and finally stayed on. Not good.

I've removed everything from the system right now and only have the mobo, CPU, and PSU connected together. Pressing the power button results in the system powering up (fans, LEDs), then off, then on and stays on, but no video output.

Any suggestions? Does it sound like the PSU?
 
I had a similar problem with my current pc only to learn the power cable to the motherboard had somehow loosened itself over the years, so I'd suggest making sure that the power cables are fully plugged in. I know it is a lame IT suggestion, but in some cases necessary.
 
Well, I am pretty sure it is the mobo. I pulled my PSU from my old rig, and same result. Just to make sure, the only thing I have connected to the mobo right now from the PSU is an 8-pin power connector and 24-pin power connector right? Sorry to sound like a total newb, just want to make sure I am not missing something stupid.

Really bummed if it is the mobo, first time I ever had one DOA.
 
Did you plug in the additional 8-pin power connector? Some mobos require both the 8 and 24 plugged in to operate.

Edit: Along with the RAM and CPU.

Yup only things plugged into mobo: 24 and 8 pin power, cpu, ram. Press power button, system turns on for a second or two, then off, then back on but no Post. I had to borrow the speaker from my old pc as well because the Sg05 doesnt have one. No sounds at all.
 
Try 1 stick of ram in each slot.

Tried that too. I think tomorrow I will remove the mobo from the case and just try to run it on the box just to make sure nothing is causing a short. Failing that I guess its time to rma to newegg.
 
What about trying with good ram? I've had a system that won't post but would power on and the culprit was bad ram.

Edit: I mean both ram modules were faulty so swapping just trying to post with one module didn't fix the problem.

Well, I think it's dead Jim. Took it out of the case, used a good PSU, reseated CPU, try one stick of RAM in both slots, same BS. System powers up for a second or two, then off, then comes back on. No post or video.

How long did you give it before turning it back off?

Reason I ask is that I recently built an i7 rig and on a completely cold boot (AKA, unplugged from the wall for x length of time) it does the exact same thing you're describing. Turns off, then on... off, then on (and repeat). I thought I had either messed something up during assembly or had a bad part when I first got it together... I kept tearing it back down to double check connections and all kinds of stuff.

On a whim, after much frustration, I just let it sit for a min and magically the screen came to life and the PC ran great. I can power it off and turn it on days later, and it boots quickly. If I unplug it though (or turn off the PSU) it will take a bit to post.

I think I probably gave it about a minute to see if anything came up on the screen. Maybe I will try one more time...
 
I had a similar issue on my U2 build. Popped out the battery and plug for awhile and reseated the RAM with 1600MHz DIMMS and it powered on. Put the 1866 DIMMS back in and it worked fine. Z87 board.

Turn on power, fans spin for a couple seconds slowly, then stop, then fans spin quickly then completely stop. Rinse and repeat.
 
So I finally got my replacement mobo and got everything put together again tonight and it booted right up with no problems yay!

Just curious now, I haven't done anything yet other than explore the BIOS settings and I am watching the hardware monitor to check out the CPU temps and it is around 48C. Is that really high for idle temps? Bear in mind I am using the stock Intel cooler.

Now because I had to tear everything apart since the first mobo was no good, when I reinstalled the CPU and cooler in the new mobo, I cleaned off the thermal grease that was smeared over the CPU and cooler and used some Arctic Silver 5 I've had for a few years (I heard the stuff doesn't go bad?). Is 48C too high for idle? What do you think? Thanks!
