new build won't post...need help!

I just finished putting my new system together and when I turned it on, the fans were all operational, but nothing came up on my screen even after I turned the monitor off and on again. I waited plenty long and still got nothin. The book for my mobo says to check the connections and jumpers, so I opened up the case to check my connections and I noticed there were no jumpers on my sata hard drives. I bought oem drives so there's no obvious directions for me to use and I can't recall how jumpers are formatted on sata drives. I figured they would just be 'cable select' automically. Anyways, what else should I do? Specs as follows:

Conroe e6300
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
eVGA 7600GT KO
WD 250GB SATA II (x2 w/o raid)
Corsair XMS2 DDR2-6400 (5-5-5-12)
 
First of all, you don't need to set any jumpers with SATA. Welcome to the 21st century.

Second of all, check the most obvious things first. If NOTHING is coming up on the monitor, check the cable from the monitor to the video cards. After that, check the video card. Is the VGA fan on? Nine times out of ten it is probably going to be one of these.
 
none of those things were the problem...but I do remember that asus has still been shipping this mobo with a bios so old that conroes won't even post...the support guy from zzf said I would be getting a newer one, but maybe he just lied because he thinks I'm not crazy enough to track him down...

and I haven't had sata before, so jumperless connections are a luxury to me :cool:

Thats true too, I just remembered reading that. If your P5W bios chip is stamped "501" or earlier, it won't post with Conroe. You nee the 701 or 801 flash. If you cant get it to post, and don't have an older processor to flash with, then you can call Asus. They will send you a bios chip with the latest revision, for free apparently. I would reccomend doing this instead of getting a replacement board from ZZF, because the new bios was just posted on the website a few days ago, so I think it highly unlikely they have any of the newer boards in stock. You will probably end up with the same problem.

Btw, my conroe build, when it arrives, will be my first sata setup as well, so i am looking forward to it! No slaves either!
 
I had seen other threads about this debacle, so I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer to play FEAR and CoD2 and HL2 and so on...I work the whole weekend...it would take fed ex that long to ship it anyway......

I feel like I wasted my energy for the day trying to finish a project that could not be finished. I remembered to look at the bios and then I saw 0502...I blame the gnomes that steal your socks from the dryer.

At least I can press the power button and listen to that gentle hum from my video card...nvidia: the way it's meant to be heard :rolleyes:

Maybe that bum on the corner has a Pentium D I can borrow...
