New build with dfi p965s won't post

Can someone here tell me what i might be doing wrong. I attempted to build a q6600 rig today with a dfi 965s mb and got no post. This sucked. Here's what I put together........

dfi p965s
q6600
ocz powerstream 520w
evga 8800 gtx x 1
crucial ballistix pc2-6400 1 gb x 2

Red led lights went on on the mb and fans spun but that was it. No post. Only things I can think of is that powerstream 520w is too weak or I got a defective part somewhere. Am I missing something obvious?

I've had very similar issues w/ my DFI not posting, the fans keep spinning but you just won't get the post beep or any post? If I'm understanding that correctly I had the same issue and it ended up being a RAM module not inserted into the socket properly, or you could have a defective one, if you know for sure that both sticks are good, then try different sockets. My experience so far with my DFI board (I haven't had any experience w/ any other board so this may be w/ every board) is that it's very picky about how memory is inserted, it's more of a feel thing and may take a few times to get right, try that and see if that helps.
 
Thanks kmS. I'm having xactly the problem you describe. Fans are spinning but no post beep of post at all. I've tried moving the RAM around and trying to boot with a single stick but I'll give it another run. Thank you for the help!
 
Do you know what stepping that q6600 is? Did you just get it?
If it's a GO stepping then you may not have the bios for it.
 
does it cycle up and down, or just stay on but not be responsive? have you cleared the cmos and returned the jumper to the proper position?

4x2 cpu plug in? 20+4 in? have you tried connecting a molex to the aux pcie power next to the main x16? power to the 8800?

using just one stick at first until you can get it to post is indeed a good idea.
 
Tx ziddey and Peepaw. Frankly I had trouble making out the stepping because it was so small and light. I can tell you that I bought it just last week from zzf for 295. There is no cycling. There are two red led lights that are on and the fans are spinning at full speed but there are not beeps and no post whatsoever. I've checked and re-checked the plugs and they are okay.I've got the molex plugged in for auxiliary power like dfi suggests. The 8800 has got both plugs in. Maybe I don't have the right bios like you said Peepaw. I've wondered whether the Powerstream 520 has got enough juice but something tells me it's not the problem here.
 
maybe it just doesn't like your psu. DFI boards are fucked and most of their fanbois are assholes. RMA it and get something better.
 
meh, say what you will, DFI boards can be picky but before RMA I suggest you head over to the DFI forum and see what other users of your board can tell you.

It has taken me awhile to get my DFI board running like a champ but it has been worth it. For some the work is not worth it and I understand that but at least try to get answers from official DFI representatives.
 
Thanks Wilsonman. I posted a similar message and there and a few people have written back that maybe the bios needs to be updated.
 
You can't flash a BIOS onto the motherboard if it is not even completing POST - I would suggest to take what those folks say with a pinch of salt.

This is a hardware problem, so initially you want to begin by eliminating what you can to complete POST.

Minimum you will need is processor, memory, motherboard, PSU and graphics card if you don't have integrated.

Remove any other connections to the hard drives, DVD drive etc. Any other add in cards, network cables, USB devices (except keyboard).

Does it change? Best way to tell is simply by listening to the POST beeps etc - this way we don't even need to connect the monitor.

If yes, the problem is with one of the parts you removed - add them back in little groups or one by one to narrow it down.

If no, then its with one of the remaining parts (obviously) - try one stick of memory at a time perhaps, or if you have another compatible processor? Maybe another graphics card.
 
usually, if it's ram or something, it'd either constantly cycle up and down or make beeps. the fact that it turns on but doesn't respond is fairly common for a bios that doesn't support the cpu.

I've had this in my ds3 when I used a bios that didn't support 1333bsel and did a pinmod for example.

Thanks peepaw I do have the box so I will take a look. I was finally able to boot the system last night. The problem appears to be the 520 w psu. When I ran just a 7900 gt or 8800 gtx with a single 120 mm attached to a Vindicator the system booted. However, after I hooked up my case fans, single hard drive, and single optical drive, the system would not boot. Strangely, when I added the peripherals back one at a time I managed to get the system to boot consistently. I plan to get a 750 w psu and see what happens. Thanks again for the help.
 
Interestingly enough I had a same problem w/ my PSU going into fault protection mode, but after I unplugged everything and carefully plugged everything back in it worked fine, could be a common problem w/ DFI boards who knows.
