Well I just built this computer a little over a year ago. I'm School PC in my sig. ANd I want to upgrade it, but I'm plannignon wating for the New Nforce4 boards and the 6800 GT PCI-e VC. I was also looking to buy a new Case(silverstone) and some other stuff. I know I really don't need a upgrade but I have money to spend so why not. My friend needs a new computer so I was thinking of giving him some of my old parts like MoBo,CPU,Case. and what other stuff I don't use.

Should I wait or start buing now? I don't mind wating a month or 2 no big hurry, considering my computer is still pretty good. WHat I really need is a new Monitor. I was thinking of a 23" Apple or SOny LCD. Or maybe even the NEC 22" CRT

Well... If you have money to spend, I'd say go with the monitor since you want it.

Your PC is still perfectly adequate to run most games. If you're looking to upgrade your case and mobo, I would say hang tight for a while longer and wait for BTX. Especially if you're looking at getting really expensive parts (like Silverstone).

This guy has the right Idea...

Your computer is really good as is, if you wanna wait and get a MAJOR upgrade, then you can wait and get a real big upgrade...

But right now, you could buy a monitor, maybe a DVD burner if you want, or even a new video card.

Personally, I'd wait for the new stuff to come out, and get a major upgrade in a few months.

That's what I'm think about doing wating till January for the new stuff like PCI-e VC, and Nforce4 boards. But I really do Need a monitor bad. The one I have at home is getting old and has many dead pixels and a green tint.

Well, if thats the case then, grab a new monitor, but don't get some "Ultra-mega-super 1 gazillion inch LCD Plasma HD Monitor dealy" for $10,000. Find one that you think would work perfectly, and get it. Possibly one of the Dell 2001FP's? They are fairly cheap for how good they are. Or so I have heard...

If you aren't worried about space/heat/electricity, then maybe a nice big CRT monitor would be better..

Edit: I see you currently have a 19" CRT... You could always just buy another 19" CRT, and save the rest of the money... my $0.02

Yea, I want a bigger monitor :) I was thinking of buying either a Sony 23" LCD 234PP/B or a 23" Apple Cinema Display LCD. There about 1800$ But I don't know how good they are with gaming and if they ghost alot?

AI was also thinking of buy the New AMD FX-55 but that would be when the New Nforce4 boards arrive, or I heard that there were duel Core proc's on the way? IS that true?

From what I've read, the Mac 23" Display doesn't ghost at all... But I've only read some google'd pages on other forums about the monitor, that has owners' testimonials.

I personally, would love something bigger than this 17" Refurb CRT... But I'm poor. My high end choice would be a Dell 2001FP, which are supposed superb, and very large.

And the 2001FP is only $679.20 (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...=us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=2999&page=external)

Hope that helps..

I wouldn't go overboard on the monitor. Ither get a good 19" or 21" LCD or a top quality 22" CRT and be done with it. NEC/Mitsubishi have the best CRT's.

And why would you be thinking about buying an FX-55? There is no point in spending that HUGE price tag for something that will have no benefit over a regular A64 except for the fact its upward multipliers are unlocked. Its better to lower the multiplier and overclock the HTT speed anyways. I would suggest a s939 90nm 3500+ and overclock it.

nForce 4 has no real benefit over the current VIA K8T800 Pro and nForce 3 Ultra chipsets. Its main feature is PCI-E and currently a PCI-E video card isn't any faster then an AGP version.

If your smart then you'll make the type of upgrades i suggested and this will leave you with more money to upgrade again down the road. Unless they are really rich i just dont know why people blow a ton of money on FX-55's or similar products considering they will just be outpaced in a few months by a new product.

Your pretty much in the same boat as me, our comps our nearly identical. I have a Samsun 172x though, which is solid for gaming. Anyhow, I have money to spend as well, but I think I'm probably going to wait until next summer, and upgrade to an nForce4 setup with PCI-Express SLI, and get the cheapest avail. A64 CPU as I wait for dual-core. Anyone have an idea if the nForce4 will support dual-core though, or would it be necessary to buy a new mobo for a dual-core processor?

If I'm going to buy a New monitor I want it to be the best I can get becasue I will most likley have it for 3+ years so that's why i want the 23" LCD.

And for the FX-55 I know that's a Over kill, but if I have the money why not? ALso the reason I want an Nforce4 Board with PCI-e slots, becasue it's more futur proof then Old AGP slot Board. SO if I decide to upgrade my VC a year or so down the road I shouldn't have any problems. I just wan to build a future proof coomputer, I know there isn't a such thing as a "future proof" Computer becasue new products arrive every 6 months or so. But if I can get the closest to a future proof then I will.

Yes but what you dont realize is you could buy a top quality LCD or CRT now for far less and then a new up to date LCD or CRT in a couple of years and still spend less money then you will on that 23" LCD. $1800 is just crazy to spend on a monitor.

And the reason i say dont go with the FX-55 isn't because its overkill, its because its NOT worth its price tag at all. There is no difference between an FX processor and A64 in terms of core technology. The FX processor just has its upward multi unlocked and for best performance you want a higher HTT speed instead of a higher multi.

For the cost of the FX-55, you could buy a 3500+ now and overclock it and get relatively the same performance as the FX-55 while saving enough money to upgrade the CPU once or maybe even TWICE down the road to CPU's that are even faster then the FX-55.

Motherboards are also one of the cheapest upgrades out there. Most of the current AMD boards are under $150 for the K8T800 Pro and nForce 3 Ultra chipsets. Its best to upgrade the CPU and Motherboard both instead of trying to hang on to a motherboard and just upgrade the CPU.

I hope you get the point i'm trying to make. Its never smart to buying the fastest of everything when the second or third step down is only marginally slower and when your talking about processors they can usually be overclocked to and past the nominal speed of the much more expensive processor. The money saved from going this path allows you to upgrade once or maybe even twice on down the road for the same amount of money spent.

Believe me, that FX-55 will seem pretty old in a year or two when new processors come out.

burningrave is absolutely right. what the hell are people thinking when they get it in their mind to go blow all that cash on an fx-51/fx-53/fx-55 processor. if u take the time to read any of the cpu comparisons on hardocp.com you will see that instead of spending those extra couple hundreds of dollars, you could get a chip like the amd64 3400+ which out performs the fx-51 in many tests, and is better than the p4 3.2ee, 3.4, and is equivalent to a p4 3.6. also, pci-e is another waste of money. totally not worth it at this point. agp 8x is still blazingly unnecessarily fast. the ati x800 xt's are crazy fast.. geforce 6800 ultra's are just as good. save ure money dude. downgrade ure cpu to at least a 3500+ or a 3400+. save ure money by getting an agp 8x mobo too... not trying to tell u what to do, but damn dude, u would be wasting a lot of money with the rig u wanna get.

WHat would be the equivilant to my 2.8P4@3.2? AMD 64 3600+? Lower or higher.

I'd probably say a A64 3200+, or Maybe a 3400+... Probably in between.. But each one has their pro's and cons (AMD vs Intel)

If I do upgrade later on I want a better CPU becasue downgrading is ruins the point of an "upgarde"

Also what is the difference between .90nm and .130nm? Which one is better and why?

Thanks guys :)

I believe the point of upgrading is to get something better than what one currently has.

Anyways, If you think you need the mac 23" monitor, which I personally don't think you need, but if you have your heart set on it, go for it.

Personally, I think you should get the Dell 20" LCD (2001FP), as it is supposed to be superb for the price, almost, what... a third, 2/5's the price? Again, just my $0.02

The monitoris a toss up. I don't have my mond set on a particular one as of yet.

The process used to make the processors... 90nm is smaller than 130nm. 90nm is supposed to be better, as it is supposed to produce less heat, or so they say, and they can also fit more in a smaller space provided, thus having the ability to make more processor in the space, and hence higher speeds/more power.

130nm is what 85-90% or so of processors now have, and compared to 90nm, is supposed to put out more heat, and have more limitations (speed and 'power') due to size of the processor core.

Hope that helps.

Edited for Clarity and Reading ease.

Why would you ever have to downgrade? If you bought a 3200+ or 3500+ now and then a faster CPU next year or the year after then you would be UPGRADEING.

For the cost of an FX-55 you could buy like a 3500+ now and then like a 4500+ or 5000+ (if they will ever even exist) in a year or two. Otherwise your stuck with the FX-55 which will be slower then the CPU's next year.

Even if i was a millionare i still probably wouldn't buy the fastest and best of everything because its really just wasteing money that could be used for other things.

the point of being a millionare is that u dont need to worry about how much money u spend on things because u have millions of other dollars to spend on anything u want :/
