Just finished a new build last night:

Gigabyte UD4P mb
Intel i5 750
GSkill 1066 4GB ram
WD 640GB Black Edition
Sapphire ATI 4870 Vapor-X edition
Enermax 600W PSU (Noisetaker II)

Originally I had a Antec Earthwatts 500W psu that came with my Antec case. I would try loading Vista (waiting for my upgrade to Win7 to get here) and about 75% of the way through loading install files, the computer would shut off. No reboot. Often had to turn the Antec psu off, then back on before it would boot again, otherwise, would only stay on for a couple of seconds. Check in the bios, the cpu was running at 33 Celsius...seems good...graphics card has led error code lights, one was a temp light that flashed when computer shut down. Swapped cards with a friend, an older 8800 from nvidia. Same issue (no leds though). Don't think the card is the problem.

Switched out PSU to the Enermax from an older case. Made it through the Vista install. Still shuts down, but lasts longer before it does. Of note-this was all done with the case open, so heat shouldn't be an issue. Plus, it's only 67 in the house. It's cold in Missouri right now.

My thoughts-the GSkill ram is supposed to have 8-8-8-21 timings...bios is reporting 9-9-9-?. Instability? Voltage was 1.589V, within the 1.5-1.6V spec on the ram. I didn't have any artic silver paste, so just used the stock stuff that came on the heatsink with the cpu...but temp of 33C looked pretty good to me.

Sorry for the long post-just wondering what it could be. Would think that if it was the mb, that I wouldn't get a boot at all. After the power fails, the gfx is warm, not hot, cpu seems cool, and ram is cold...just not feeling a heat issue. HD is brand new and had been formatted in a different machine and benchmarked and no errors showed up. The OS is installed now, just haven't gotten it to stay up long enough to get any drivers installed, etc. System seems a bit slower than expected too....Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Will try after I fix something else-noticed after installing some chipset drivers that the cpu was up to 88C. Obviously I didn't get the heatsink seated properly. Waiting for it to cool down a couple minutes, then will try that.

If that doesn't fix it, I'll try the ram voltage.

Wow yeah sounds like thermal protection shut-down. Regarding your RAM...yeah you're gonna need to drop your RAM multi to 8x (133*4) - especially if you plan on raising BLCK anytime soon. If your RAM is set for cas8, it may have some headroom with cas9 beyond 1066, but I really have no idea.

It was the thermal protection. Is installing updates now at a nice and cool 32C. 40C is the highest it has shown according to the monitor now. Good easy fix, the kind I like! Boo for stock heatsink paste...should have known better. I did adjust the ram timings down to GSkill's published spec. Also turned on a temp monitor in the bios for the cpu and fan...that would have been easier if they were on by default. Live and learn. Thanks for the help everyone-case closed!

Stock Intel thermal compound works fine. It was more likely the mount rather than the thermal compound or heatsink.
