Hey all, I have a few questions that can hopefully be answered before I build my new rig. First off, this is going to be a whole new rebuild. I'm an AMD guy myself but I'm open to INTEL depending on prices. What I wanted to ask was my current HD is 80 gigs, its IDE, and is it possible to transfer data from it to a SATA drive? Also, is SATA faster than IDE? One more thing, this is on a side note... my current LCD monitor is a no-name U.S. Logic monitor and it's really dim when I play games, to the point where it's hard to see in dark areas, any solutions?

I don't know if you can transfer from IDE to SATA, but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to...
SATA is faster than IDE, but you might not notice it.
For your monitor you could try turning up the Brightness/Gamma in games, or get a new monitor, perhaps a nice 19" CRT if accomadations permit.

What vid card are you using?
When I played EQ with crap vid cards it would be very dark. When I upgraded cards it was very bright.
Yes, you can transfer your data, but another solution would be to use a Serielle adapter on your current drive. Suprisingly it does make a preformance difference, albiet less than using a normal SATA drive would.
SATA is most definately faster, depending of course on whether or not you frequently use all of the bandwidth available to your hd. I personally noticed a 10fps boost when I switched my destination drive for my recordings of halo pc footage for a show that I'm working on. 18->28 fps of 800*600 footage uncompressed avi. But to be fair, the new drive also had 8mb of cache instead of the 2mb of the pata one.

Any motherboard you find with SATA support will also handle IDE without trouble. The file transfer should not be complicated in any way.
If you are looking for a computer right now, look for Athlon 64s, preferably socket 939 if you can afford it. You can get better performance for the price from an A64 these days hands down. I don't have any specific part suggestions for you, but Asus makes great boards in general, as does Abit. As far as RAM goes, I am a Corsair man.

What is your contrast ratio on your LCD? That may be the underlying problem.
Also, for SATA vs PATA, you will not notice a difference. Any performance increase is due to the actual drive being better. Just take a look at drive benchmarks for the same model, PATA vs SATA. The burst limit being 50 mbps, or 17 mbps higher only affects the 2, 8, or 16 mb of cache that is on the drive. Standard transfer limits top out at 50-60 mbps for the outer regions of the platter. However, there is really no practical reason not to go with a SATA drive unless you will also need it for backwards compatability. PATA will be around for quite a while.
