New build or upgrade?

Hey All,

I've been having some GPU issues with my current build from 2013. I am considering doing a new build and still working the details out on that but wanted to see if anyone thought I should upgrade what I have instead of just buying new.

Here's the current setup.

MOBO: ASUS P8Z77-V https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131820
CPU: i5-3750k https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-i5-3570K-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B007SZ0E1K
GPU: ASUS GTX 660 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121660
RAM: 16GB DD3 2133 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231476
PSU: Rosewill 750W https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182073
SDD: Brand new Samsung 250G SSD and a less than 1yr old WD 1TB magnetic for data, no issues here and plan to reuse these either way.

My biggest objective is to upgrade the video card for some moderate gaming and be able to play any newer games coming out on somewhat decent settings. I'm not planning on going VR and no plans on 4k at this point, although I plan to look at display upgrades after this.

The big question is would you even consider doing a GPU upgrade on this mobo/rig to something like even a GTX 1080 or look at starting from scratch. I could go broke and strech my budget to somewhere around 1500-2k but if I could confidently get away with a $300-$500 GPU upgrade for the next couple years I would like to go that route.

Thanks for the time and feedback!

What resolution are you gaming at? (More specifically, what's the brand and model of your monitor?)

Have you overclocked your processor? If yes, how high is it running at?

At first glance, you could be fine with a GPU upgrade. Aside from the age of the processor, are you having any problems from it?

Rig is fine. Buy a new Graphics card like the newly lower priced 1080 and then decide if you think you need to upgrade the rest.

I'm running 1920x1080 on 2 generic 21" monitors. Planning to upgrade to a decent display after this purchase, haven't figured out what I am planning to buy yet but looking at getting a 144Hz display. No overclocking done on the CPU.

The CPU seems to run rock solid. With the SSD I can boot up to Win 10 faster than I count.

I do have some concerns about the motherboard. I have some strange USB problems at times with devices becoming unusable and not recognized. I have also seen big delays at random times with input from a USB keyboard or mouse. The built in wifi no longer works as well.

At this point I think I plan to buy a new GPU and then continue into a new build slowly over the next month or two. I'll probably go GPU -> Display -> Case -> Then pull the trigger on the rest.

May wait and see what happens with the cannonlake release if it happens in the near future.

Thanks for the input.

Here is kind of where I am thinking of going with the new build:

I would think you would be pretty good staggering your build like that. A the very least you can see if your cpu really does bottleneck the GPU. If you are planning on the x99 platform I would really wait to see if the new AMD chips start putting pressure on Intel to release the next gen stuff or maybe lower prices, and maybe consider the chips as the 1700 you get 8c16t for $329. I do think the ivy bridge chip that you have should be within reach 10-15% of kabby lake and maybe a little less with the boadwell 6800k chip, unless you need the extra cores for other tasks outside gaming. Also note the MSRP of the 1080s is now $499 so a little better bang for the buck in my opinion.
