Hi this is my first post here, long time lurker. Got a question for you guys, my current system is as follows:

q6600 3.5ghz (Corsair h50)
8gigs drr2 800
2tb hdd space
gtx 275

this performs fine but i am thinking of getting a q9550 for the extra cache, is it worth it? or am i throwing money away buying a socket 775 cpu?

You're throwing away money by getting a socket 775 CPU. Hold off on any socket 775 CPU upgrade.

You system is fine, you have a good gpu and nicely overclocked cpu, you should be good for atleast another year.

Guess ill hold off unless i find one used cheap, is it worth it to throw 3k at a new build or will there be a new socket type soon? (Been hearing something about a 6 core cpu)

Unless you make money doing it (buy the Q9550 for 140, sell the Q6600 for 150) its not worth it.

You just got two responses telling you don't bother but you ask the same question again? lol Seems like you are just set on spending money, don't let us hold you back :)

Sorry if I was unclear, my original question was would it be worth upgrading my current computer. Since it was socket 775 I was unsure about throwing more money at it....and I from the previous responses I concluded it was not. My second question was would it be safe to build a new computer now? ( i7 based ) or are they soon leaving that socket type for a new type to support the 6 core cpus?

The new six-core CPUs will be compatible with X58 and socket 1366.

Whether or not a new $3000 rig will be worth it now depends entirely on what EXACTLY you're planning doing with the PC.

If it's just straight up gaming, no real need to upgrade anything on that PC beside the video card and possibly PSU if it's up to stuff.
