Im helping my bro build a comp. both of us never have built a computer, but I got a friend that will help with putting it together. Just need some imput on the hardware choices, like maybe i should get something else vs. what I have listed. Thanks for your time and imput.

The Hardware:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

EVGA Geforce 9800 GTX (got 2 of these for SLI)

+Motherboard (Not sure if I should go with a 680i or 780i) EVGA ect..

Western Digital Raptor 150gb 10k drive

Silverstone 1000W powersupply

CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 5-5-5-18

NZXT Zero Full ATX tower

ZALMAN 9500A (CPU cooler)

Pioneer 20X DVD±R DVD Burner

Thanks for looking, just needa know any incompabilitys with the hardware, or any parts that will slow down the system. My bro plans to overclock slightly, like 3GHz on air. Any suggestions welcome!

First, please answer the following questions:

- How much, at most, are you willing to spend on the build?
- Which monitor(s)/resolution(s) are you going to use?
- Which programs/games are you going to use?
- Do you plan on overclocking the computer?
- How long are you planning on keeping this computer for?

Additional guides on how to build a computer can be found in the GenHard FAQ sticky.

hmmm

1) at the moment the build is at 1500 most is 2000
2)I got a westy 37w3se 1920x1080
3)Age of connan, and other MMO/FPS style games
4)Yes
5)till the hardware can't run games well

Forgot a couple of questions...

- Which parts do you have already? Which parts are you transferring from another build?

sorry forgot to mention this but it's fresh build , from scratch.

also, he's not sure what type of OS he wants...

Forget the 1000 watt PSU -- it's totally unnecessary. The Corsair TX 750 is plenty, and it runs ~$100 right now, sometimes a bit less after rebate. Look at buy.com and provantage.com

Forget the 9800GTXs -- 8800 GTS 512MBs are a good bit cheaper and nearly as fast, and Tri-SLI is a waste. Make sure you get EVGA brand for the Step Up program in case the new cards next month are really great and you want to get them replaced.

The 780i is potential trouble. Get EVGA's 750i FTW board instead. $200. 4 SATA ports, which is unfortunate, but if you need to connect more drives you can always just buy a cheap SATA controller card.

The Raptor is a waste. Get a Western Digital 640GB AAKS series 7200RPM or a Seagate 750GB F1 series 7200RPM for ~$100-120. It'll be a lot bigger, just as fast, run quieter, and cooler. Raptors are past their prime.

The Zero is kind of junky if you see one in person. Consider one of Lian-Li or Silverstone's midtower cases instead, or possibly the Coolermaster RC-690 or 590 if you'd like to save some money.

The Zalman HSF is overpriced and underperforming. I'd recommend the Xigmatech S1283 Rifle 120mm (~$40), the Zerotherm Nirvana NV120 (~$50), or the Thermalright Ultima 90 (~$40) with a quality 90mm fan (~$8) if you want something smaller/lighter.

Pioneer has nothing on anyone anymore -- they outsource everything to other OEMs. Unless it's ~$30 or less, ditch it for a Samsung, ASUS, or LiteOn drive.

You've got DX10 capable cards and a nice big display -- Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM runs $100. That's what I'd go with.

may sound like i'm a bit behind (which i am) but where did all the 8800GTX go, they used to be forsale when nvidia first released these cards..

They're falling out of the channel -- that's how it tends to work. The 8800 GTS 512MB and 9800GTX are the current replacements, and the Geforce 2xx series is set to be released in mid June.
