New build - need help with gfx

Hi,

I'm planning a new build and could do with some suggestions as to what gfx I should go with. I dont much care if it's nvidia or amd tbh.

My new setup will consist of a I7-4790K, Z97 Extreme6 (or Maximus VII Hero) and then I was pretty much hooked on a MSI Geforce GTX 970 due to how silent it runs (according to the review on techpowerup). However I since noticed the design issues with the ram, but im not sure I will ever actually go above 3,5. I run a dual monitor setup, but I only use one monitor for gaming (currently at 1080p). The other is usually running a browser.

I came across a ASUS MATRIX-R9290X-P-4GD5 at pretty much the same price. Would I be better off getting one of those (or another r9290x for that matter)?
 
Why not wait for the new 300 series? I know you said you only game at 1080p so either card will get the job done, but the 290x will use up a lot more lecky
