Goal: DB Development server. Eliminate the 200/mo$ I'm paying to 'hold' onto a good deal server for development, that's not needed at the moment and 'own' my hardware, as the dev. hardware lasts me 3-5 years for web-dev projects as of last 15 year avg. This also needs to fit in a tower-case/desktop and is not destined for a rack. Ideally I wanted 64gb RAM to start with room to expand, but it seems that jump is a lot of $$ and also lower frequency CPUs.

Budget: ~$1k (RAM / CPU / MOBO / ??? )

IPMI is a must.
Highest CPU frequency.

Hardware Already Owned:
2 x Intel 730 480gb SSD (MySQL) ($400 11/21/14)
1 x Intel 520 120gb SSD (OS) (Years ago, never went into full deployment.)
1 x Intel 520 120gb SSD (Log Files) (Years ago, never went into full deployment.)
1 x ATX Case NIB (Desktop Spare I have)
1 x EVGA 500w 80Plus PSU

Looking At Buying:
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLM-F-O uATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C224 DDR3 1600

Intel E3-1270-v3

Will on-board controller be sufficient for my needs or should I go with something else? Really trying to keep the overall cost to 1 year of current server cost so we can realize savings that much faster.

ECC memory was one of the features he settled on, I believe. Anyhow it seems to be a very similar class of build and may hold some additional insights for you. Or yet more choices... :-D

You are correct, and Intel CPU with HT. Obviously the more DB cached in RAM the better, the problem is jumping from 32gb to 64gb+ is just out of budget, and since this is dev. if I "need" that continuously it will go into a new production machine Intel 3600 pcie drives, etc... At this time the data will fit within 32gb just fine and I still have a bunch of dev. work and analysis to work on.

This is very similary spec'd to our other 'all in one' web-servers that I've been impressed with immensely after going from 1366, and they're Sandy not Haswell too.. that's how I based the build.
 
Now you have me debating jumping up to:

Since it does 3.8ghz Turbo, and has 2 more cores to boot! It sucks the LGA 2011-v3 Motehrboards are 2x as much, and RAM is 2x as much though :( It will likely double-build cost to go that route....

Maybe jumping to the E5-1650 with 16gb RAM to start, and getting a mobo that can scale to 128gb is probably most affordable and scalable for future.

I notice that the E5 single thread performance isn't as great as the E3, so while it may be an impressive machine it may not be optimal for your db development. The Xeon E3-1231 v3 sits in the sweet spot for single-thread bang for the buck. That with 32 GB of ECC RAM might not be a bad starting point either.
 
The E5-2xxx have lower clocks and that's why in single threaded apps they are worse. Luckily newer versions of MySQL can take advantage of multi-threading better, and so can Percona.

FWIW I'd be looking at the E5-1xxx due to $$ and clocks are almost identical to the E3 line, but allow a ton more ram, and PCIE expansion


Still leaning to the 1270-v3 or 1231-v3 to save 40 bucks and only lose 100mhz, and pickup 2 more instruction sets that may or may not be beneficial. The E5 def. has scalability on its side, but for the price in 2 years I may as well get a new system vs. buying it now to last me 2 years for how cheap I can put together the E3 system.

I was looking at going: Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2 Six-Core Processor 3.5GHz/3.9GHz with a DDR3 supermicro motherboard & 64gb RAM: $1404 @ SuperBiiz. Not haswell, and not ddr4 -- the ram is about 45% cheaper and motherboard is about 30% cheaper than 2011-v3 CPU cost the same (new/retail) unfortunately.

At this point I think I may wait until Jan/Feb when hopefully there are more 2011-v3 motherboard and ram choices.
 
Could a fairly quiet rack mount server work?

Potentially, yes. I've considered, and looked at some but for the prices i was still better building.

Do you know of any good used ones? Seems unlikely for this generation.

Haven't done testing myself but I doubt the difference in performance would justify the cost of DDR4 over DDR3. I'd def go with the 2011 socket with a 6 core xeon like you have there, start with 32GB and upgrade to 64GB later on

I haven't gotten my hands on any DDR4 systems yet, but I can't imagine it's going to be at all significant. Throw RAM at your buffer pool instances and possibly beef up your storage with the savings.
 
Looking at:

SUPERMICRO SYS-1018R-WC0R 1U Rackmount or the motherboard from this system that I can put in an existing case I have, and use an existing powersupply to save a big chunk. Other motherboard suggestions?

Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3


Grand Total: $3,669.18 (IF all from NewEgg) (Or possibly 64gb RAM to start to shave a few hundred off.)

I also already now have 3x480gb Intel 730 SSDs. But want to be able to add the intel PCIE 3600 in the near future.

I'm curious if the onboard hard drive controller will be fine for the SSDs, and that this case & mobo can handle the Intel PCiE 3600 SSD.

I don't plan to run RAID for this system as the data will be backed up, and uptime isn't critical at the moment. Planning something like 1 drive for OS, 1 drive for DB, 1 drive for logs/misc. Possibly a 4th drive if need be, and eventually the pcie SSD for the DB.

Suggestions?
Thoughts?

Well, if you read the thread I said I didn't want to do RAID, but I did change my mind and want to at-least have that option on the card, so I did go with a new card to be as much futureProof as I can, as I know this card will change duties eventually.

I need to update 1st post.

I now have 8x Intel 730 SSD 480gb and a LSI 9300 MegaRAID SAS 9361-8i (LSI00416) w/1gb cache & cache/bbu that I'm planning to do some various testing with drive configs based on data I need to hold me over for the intel pcie 3600 I plan to eventually add or what's latest.
