So I'm sitting here putting together my new machine. So far in is the CPU, mobo, cpu cooler, hdd, optical drive, memory and its bolted into the case etc.

So I go to try and test that the powers working ok, so I turn it on and a tiny bit of smoke comes from the top of the mobo, doesn't seem to have came from a specific component though, what shall I do?

And now when I press the power on button the fan starts spinning but immediately stops... have I broke the board?
Also the CPU fan does not spin when I start up even though it's plugged in.

Did the smoke come from under one of the heatsinks near the socket?

This sounds like one of the vrms got toasted, so it may be time to try an RMA.

Is pull the system apart and inspect the board for any burned parts.

It was the top of the board near the socket. Is it a faulty board or something I've done?

It definitely sounds like the smoke came from the VRMs, look under those heatsinks near the socket to see if you can see any burn marks.

What board was it, as well as other specs?

Was any part of the case touching the back of the board?

I see a small burn mark on the back of the board, at the top, which is where I saw the smoke come from.
The board is a Gigabyte Z68P-DS3

And it was all screwed in properly as far as I could see, I don't think it was touching the back of the board.

Right now id try and do an RMA.

As for whether it was a bad board or a mistake, that's hard to tell. It's pretty rare that a board burns on its own. :(

I'm assuming you used standoffs correct?

What other hardware did you use?

What's an RMA? Sorry, first build here!

I rang up the company I purchased it from and they said they'll test it and see if it's faulty or not.

As far as I know they were all correct....
The hardware I had in it were Intel i5 2500k, G-Skill 8GB RAM, coolermaster GX 650 psu. This was pretty much all I had plugged in at the time.
