New build has video issues

and everything seemed nice and smooth. After installing video drivers and using 3D graphics for about 35 minutes, system crashed and then there was no video. If I take out the GPU and use the onboard, it works fine so I figured GPU was bad. Exchanged it, the new one does the same thing. Now I'm thinking there's probably something in the BIOS for power management or that Virtu thing or auto overclock or whatever that is causing the issue. I can hear the computer boot into Windows but the video is just black or blue solid color, sometimes goofy check marks, weird crap. Again, putting it on integrated graphics it works fine. Any ideas what settings I should try or what the problem could be?
 
I tried the one on the CD and the newest one. Still shouldn't affect whether or not you can see boot screens I wouldn't think.
 
Can you get back to a configuration that allows you to use the video card in Windows? You said you had something working for 35 minutes...
 
Asus have released 6 bios version for that board since April. I would use the onboard video to get the bios updated. Then run it for a day or so and see if its stable. If it runs ok(minus games of course) then try to install the gpu again.

Updated BIOS with no change. In BIOS I have set the GPU selector (Auto, iGPU, PCIe, PCI) to PCIe numerous times and it always changes back to auto. Basically, the computer is stuck thinking it should use the onboard video. How do you turn that sucker off? The manual is worthless other than showing what options are listed in the BIOS.

EDIT: Found a spot in the BIOS where it tells you what you have installed in the PCIe slots and it says there's nothing there. So: how to fix that or do I have to tear the mother effer down and return the mobo?

I always leave my settings on auto as the MB should detect the videocard and output the signal through the card. Some motherboards allow you to disable the on board graphics under the chipset settings section.

If that doesn't work and the graphics card works fine in another system, then out goes the defective MB.
 
sounds bad to me contact your local shop and arrange an exchange or refund, or contact asus for an rma. You have done more than enough trouble shooting on this imho.
 
I was really hoping for a magical switch somewhere that I didn't know about so I didn't have to take the mobo out and re-build everything. Ah well, if that's what it takes that's what will happen.

Put an old AMD 5xxx card in and it worked fine... so maybe I did just get two bad 7770s in a row. Sigh, going to try swapping that out first. Maybe with a GTX 560 instead.

hmm are there bios updates for the 7770? But, if you can't boot it I dont know how you would update it.
 
ok just to say we checked everything here. You are hooking up the pcix power cord to the video card correct?

Check to see if there are any driver updates for the pcix 3.0 controller.
