What would be a good first build for my 9950 BE and 4870x2? You can see the rest of my system in my sig. 260 is gone and I replace my OCZ with some Mushkin Redline PC8000 2x2.

I will most likely just start with the cpu, but will do the gpu in the not too distant future.

I would like to stay under $300 if possible, but lets see what options I have.

Your help is appreciated for this newbie.
 
Cpu Waterblock: D-Tek FuZion v.2 or Swiftech Apogee GTZ w. GTZ-AM2 Mount
Pump: Swiftech MCP355 with XPSC Top
Radiator: Swiftech MCR320-QP-K

Use 1/2" barbs like these EK High-Flow Fittings, if you go with my suggestions then that would be 8 barbs total: 2x radiator, 2xpump, 2xcpu block, 2xresevoir

I use these tubes since they are cheap: ClearFLEX 1/2" Tubing

there is a possibility that the tube will bend, it might be a good idea to purchases these: PrimoChill Anti-Kink Coils 5/8"

Purchase a few clamps or buy some zip-ties to make sure the tubing to each barb is sealed and tight.

Resevoir's are a personal taste, but if you want to go with something cheap & simple: Swiftech MCRES-Micro

If you get this combination, it should last you a very long time. I don't think many people here will argue that these are top of the line parts.

Things you should remember in terms of the tubing. The 1/2" I recommend is the size of the inner dimension of the tubing. The outer dimensions of the tubing differ on brand. So if you decide to change your choice of coils you should put that into consideration.

Depending on your shipping or state tax (if any), this should amount to around $250.00
 
With my LL liquid cooled system that I had previously, I had a T-Line and a Swiftech Micro res. Bleeding air was easy with that combo.

For cooling both the CPU and the GPU you will need a beefier rad than the MCR series.
 
Quadruple Feser rad at jab-tech is $149. Figured that would last you if you ever went crossfireX.
 
If you plan on running low rpm fans or a more quiet system I think a quadruple feser is a good choice. Seems to me the rule of thumb is get the biggest radiator your case can fit. That will allow more headroom so that you can use lower rpm fans for a more quiet system, and of course should handle more heat for future upgrades. Any how it's only $50 more than the other rad your looking at, but the question is can it fit in your case...

I'd go with 7/16" masterkleer tubing... It's much more secure than the half inch stuff, and doesn't torque your blocks as much, preventing tube-slip off and potentially damage to open-die devices (like a delidded CPU or most non-IHS'd GPUs).

It's also cheap as hell ;)

Very true. Between compression and rotary fittings, I probably have over $150 just in fittings alone. :eek:
 
Now what about fans?

I currently have Noctua fans in my case and love them.

But are they good fans for radiator cooling? Are some rads better with lower CFM fans?

I am leaning towards the Apogee GTZ based on recommendations and I am thinking of the Thermochill PA120.3 rad.
 
What are the ranges for a low/medium/high fans?

I would like to stay with Noctua since they rock, but don't want to lose out on cooling quality for my preference of sound.

So is low like 0-40 CFM and mediu 41-100 and high is 100+???

Compression fittings from Koolance will run you $9 a pair, with is $4.50 each vs. barbs that are $2.35 each. In my opinion, if you can afford it go compression as it will look better, won't pop off and are easy to work with.

You can see my AMD system in my sig that this was done on.

So far so good. Have some leaking during testing and just had to tighten some fittings.

Doing this in my hotel room, left the tool selection to be desired.

But I got it in and with the OC I had at 3.319 my idle temps where 51 and now they are 36. So that is nice. Will start cranking on it later to hope to get up closer to 3.5 and 3.6.

With that said my 4870x2 temps went up from 68 to 83. I know these run hot, but odd that it went up. Not worrying too much, will most likely next month get the XPSR for it and cool it down and maybe a NB cooler.

BTW...what recommendations for what I should do and get forsure the GPU and possibly the NB?

Thats a lot of tubing. For NB check out the EK waterblocks, and look at their compatibility list.

I know on the tubing.

Added extra because I could at the time and with adding the 4870x2 block in the loop soon and possibly the NB one, thought that would allow for some wiggle room when I whack off some tubing most likely. Since getting the tubes off the fittings and barbs I am sure will be a challenge.

Plus it was my first try :D

How do I plug in the 4870x2 cooler and a NB cooler?

Besides getting the blocks and the fittings, I am going to get a MCR220 and more fans. for the this loop.

Can someone help me in the process on where I add these in???

I assume I just cut hoses add in the blocks and rad and for the most part that is it. Do I or should I get more tubing?

Appreciate any help.
 
you could get more tubing. But you could try to do some U-Bends to get those GPU and NB blocks in, just get some anti kinking coils that fit your OD. Also I would get some extra tubing just to be safe.
