ok guys and gals i need some advice for a new build. mainly i will be using it for video encoding and a little gaming but i am not sure what processor/mobo i should go with. i was looking into the new z87's but i need some advice. budget is 2,000-2,500 with room to spare so i really want the best options. i want suggestions for cpu, mobo, gpu, ram and psu

Do you plan on overclocking the CPU and/or GPU? Also do you need a monitor? What Resolution?

Oh, for real multi-tasking don't forget a couple of Dell UltraSharp U3011 30" Monitors! ha ha, ha
You can be converting a blu-ray movie to mp4, while watching a movie, browsing the net, chatting, playing a game, working with photoshop, converting Wav to MP3 files, etc.

No water cooling?

Why skimp and get a 5400rpm drive?

Why not get a modular PSU? That case does not have a lot of room for cables and money isn't really an issue.

Wouldn't a single 780 be a better fit for 'light' gaming? No frame lag and not reliant on SLI driver profiles. Plenty of power. What monitor is he going to use? Resolution is important here.

Just my .02 :)

With that money on hand I'd buy something like this:

1-) Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz Socket LGA 1150 Boxed $350
2-) Asus Gryphon Z87 (5yr warranty) $175
3-) Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB (2 kits of 2x8GB) Low Profile DDR3-1600 1.35V $268
4-) Corsair AX850 Gold PSU (7yr warranty) $136
5-) Corsair 350D Windowed MicroATX Tower $110
6-) Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (5yr warranty) $240
7-) Toshiba PH3300U 3TB 7200RPM (retail box, 3yr warranty) $150
 LG 14x Internal Blu-ray Burner WH14NS40 - Bare Drive $70
9-) EVGA ACX GTX 780 $660
10) Corsair Hydro110 $130

Total No taxes $2,289

FTFY

No water cooling? He does NOT mention OCing.
Why skimp and get a 5400rpm drive? For storage no need for speed/performance.
Why not get a modular PSU? That case does not have a lot of room for cables and money isn't really an issue. With all these components, he will need all the cables anyways.
Wouldn't a single 780 be a better fit for 'light' gaming? No frame lag and not reliant on SLI driver profiles. Plenty of power. What monitor is he going to use? Resolution is important here. Yes, agree with you here, a single card will suffice, but why not put a second one when there is enough budget to spare?
Just my .02 :)

Water cooling may not be neccessary.

Video needs a 3930k!

^ 12 seconds difference for a 30min movie (48 seconds for a 2 hour movie) at equalized overclock speeds between a quad core and a hex core for encoding is hardly a huge difference, imo. Keep in mind that a 3930K runs at 3.2 GHz base/3.8 GHz turbo while a 4770K runs at 3.5 GHz base/3.9 GHz turbo.

I'd say the $350 4770K is the much better price/performance option here than the $570 3930K. Although if OC'ing will be done by the OP, the advanatge will likely go to the 3930K, since it will have a better "OC lottery" than HWL, since HWL is pure luck of the draw to get one that can actually do better than 4.2 GHz.

However you slice it, you can still get a really good setup for less than $2,500.00. I paid about $5,000 for a desktop Dell Pentium II 300Mhz and a few other components very long time ago. Ha ha ha
