Still got a P4 and a gig of ram in a Dell from like 6 years ago. Time to upgrade......

I am looking forward to building ASAP. Any tweaks / changes you might make? Things will get upgraded as needed. Like I will add more ram/hdds/dvd drives as money comes in. I just need a better computer for now.

As for a video card I have a 7600GT KO that does fine on my dual 1080p monitors since I do not game on my computer. I will need another video card though since I have a 32'' TV LCD I want to set up as a main, and have my two 23'' samsungs on either side. In due time though.

Thanks in advance for any help

You can keep the board, optical drive, and case, but I recommend picking up the following:

Processor: Go with the X4 955 instead of the X4 965. For just a bit more, however, you could go with the six-core X6 1055T, and that has plenty of good combo deals.
Memory: Go with the G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 kit -- it's cheaper.
HDD: Go with the Samsung F3 1TB HDD. You get a faster, larger capacity HDD for only a bit more money.
PSU: Go with the Antec NEO ECO 620C. Though it doesn't come with a mail-in rebate, it's a far better quality PSU.

I don't have time for links, but they're all available at NewEgg.

Thanks for the input.

Few questions.

Why should I consider the 955 over the 965, and why should I consider the 1055T overall? Will I actually utilize all 6 cores? I mean i know more is "usually" (and I use that term loosely) better, but I honestly thought that nothing will utilize 6 PC cores yet.

The 200 mhz difference between the 965 (3.4) and the 955 (3.2) doesn't equal the $24 difference in price $184 vs $160 . If you wanted to spend ~200, the better processor for the long haul is the 6core :)

Oh okay.

And, how is the performance difference between the 965/955 vs. the 1055T? So the performance difference is worth spending a little more?

Is there any immediate performance gains, or is it just more future proof?

I would like to do some OCing, and I read a review that says the 1055T is not a good OCer. However I dont need to Oc so that is not a make a or break deal.

The speed difference may not even be "felt". Different applications would use it differently, however.
The 955 can be overclocked to the 965 specification, which would negate any performance difference.

The six core offers multitasking benefits that can be used by multithreaded applications.

I wonder if I use any applications that would take advantage of hex cores.

I guess it couldnt hurt to have though, since its not worse then the 955/965, but arguably better, I think is how I understand this.

1055T will get too 3.7-4GHz from most reports with people who know to overclock and not these lazy black edition users.

Best value would still be a 955 but still having hexa core cpu is so much cooler lolz.

Well, I have never OCd before so its all new to me. I might just go with the value one. Reading what the hex cpu excells in, its just not my kind of computing. I appreciate the suggestion, but it would be a waste of cores lol.

And I found a promo code on newegg for the 965, so I think that is what I will get. It knocked off 15 dollars.

Just bought the 965. On my way to a new build. Thanks for all the help guys, I am sure there will be more questions to come.
