New boards with old cpu??

I am thinking I may have to upgrade my motherboard here in the near future and was just wondering, will a newer say am3 motherboard be backwards compatible with a am2 socket cpu? I currently have a Athlon 64 x2 5000+ and don't have enough money to spend on both a motherboard and cpu at the same time..

No, you would need to buy an AM2+ board, since AM3 boards only support DDR3, whereas your x2 5000 only uses DDR2. Look at this NewEgg list of AM3/AM2+/AM2 boards.
